STUD FASTENER PLATE APPLICATION mm SPT-. 30, 191s.
LEONARD 3'. SULLIVAN, OF NORTH SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
STUD-FASTENER PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 30, 1916. Serial No. 123,158.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD J. SULLIVAN, a subject of the King of England, residing at North Sydney, in the Province of New South Wales, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stud- Fastener Plates, of which the following is a specification.
In constructing the frame for a building, it is the usual pr: ctice to butt the studs onto the plates, of the frames and spike through, to notch out the plates to receive the studs, or to provide a mortise and tenon joint, but in the first instance, the spike is not a secure fastening and when the notching or mortise and tenoning is resorted to, the structural features of the frame are weakened, therefore it is an object of my invention to provide a plate which may be used for securing the studs of a frame to the plate, for framing the intermediate, trimmer, and other joints of floor or ceiling where trimmed for a chimney opening, and in other like connections, without the necessity of spiking glrough or cutting any of the framing tim- A further obj ec is to so construct the fastener plate that the same may be shipped 'and sold in a flat or blank form and may be bent up and secured in use, being adjusted to the size of the timber, without the use of special tools and without special knowl edge or training.
With the above and other objects in vie-w, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter set forth in connection with the accompanying drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the device in the bent up form with the joints shown by the dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a view in edge elevation.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank forming the fastener plates.--
As here shown. the fastener plate comprises a single piece of sheet metal which is stamped or otherwise out to the proper shape, and it has been found that for all ordinary uses a fastener plate stamped or cut from eighteen or twenty gage black sheet iron has suflicient strength, although it will be understood thatthe dimensions and the materials used in the construction of the plates do not constitute an essential part of the invention and the device in the form illustrated in Fig. 1 might be constructed of cast metal.
The device comprises a body portion 1 which is extended at one end and is out to form the three tongue portions 2, 3, and 4, the opposite end of the body portion 1 having a substantially U-shaped cut provided therein to form the tongue 5, it being the intention that the portion around this tongue 5, and which will be hereinafter referred to as the extension 6, shall be bent in an angular disposition from the main body portion 1.
The wings 7 and 8 are formed to extend laterally from the main body portion 1 and these wings are cut through in substantially U-shaped formation to provide the side tongues 9 and 10. It is preferable that the tongues 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as the side.
tongues 9 and 10 and the laterally extending wings? and 8, and also the extension-6 be provided with the nail receiving openings 11 which may be pierced, stamped, or otherwise formed therethrough. It is also perhaps preferable that a nail opening 12 be provided through the body portion 1.
In the use of the fastener plate, the device as manufactured may have the tongue 5 and theextension end 6 bent in opposite directions to extend at right angles to the body portion 1, if this be desired, or these portions might be left to extend in the same plane with the remaining portions of the fastener plate structure so that the entire piece of sheet metal will be substantially flat, the body portion 1 is placed against a plate, or other piece to which the parts are to be secured and in conjunction with which a separate piece of framing timber is to be mounted. The extension portion 6 is then brought up against the side edge of the plate or other timber and cloutheaded or other nails are passed through the openings 11 thereof into the plate, after which. the tongues 2 and 4 will be bent up against the opposite side edge of the plate or other timber and will be secured rigidly thereto by the use of nails. The framing timber is then butted against the body portion 1 of the fastener plate and the tongue 5 is secured to the one of the side edges of the timber, the tongue 3 being bent down to be secured against the opposite side edge of the frame timber and following this, the laterally ex- Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
. cific form of the device,
tending wing portions 7 and 8 will be bent down against the sides of the frame timber and nails will be passed through the opening 11 thereof into the frame timber and through the openings of the side-tongues 9 and 10 into the plate.
By forming the fastener plate of a single piece of material which can be bent and shaped as it is placed in use, a device is provided which is adaptable for application to various sizes of timbers and various uses, further the parts are all so arranged that each of the extensions, wings, and tongues, act tostrengthen the fastening accomplished by the remaining portions, and while I have herein shown and described only one speit will be understood that the fastener plate might be shaped and bent in other lines than those hcreinbefore' set forth, thatthe plate might be secured first to the studs, and then subsequently to the plate in an inverse order of that hereinbefore set forth, that the device as an entirety might be constructed of cast metal shown to the form shown in Fig. 1, and other changes and modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement of the parts as hereinbefore set forth, but only to such points as may be limited in the claims.
I claim 1. A stud fastener plate comprising a body portion, an extension formed at one each being provided gated body provided with a tongue end of said body portion and bent upwardly, I
from said extension an bent downwardly, side wings provided from the body portion to be bent downwardly, side tongues struck from'the side wings to lie in the same plane with the body portion, a central tongue provided at the remaining end of the body portion to be bent at right an les thereto, and side tongues provlded a tongue struck ad]acent said central tongue to be bent at right angles to the body portion in a direction opposed to the bending of the central tongue, the several portions of the structure with openings to receive fastening means to permit securement of the plate in a relation to mount a pair of framing timbers in the proper relation.
2. A stud fastener formed from a single piece of sheet metal comprising an elonstruck from each end thereof, said tongues and ends being bent to extend in an opposite direction with respect to each other, said body provided with laterally extending portions, a tongue struck from each laterally extending portion and projecting in the same horzontal plane as the body and said laterally extending portionsbelng bent to extend at right angles to said body.
In testimony whereof I in presence of two witnesses. LE N-Anna. SULLIVAN. Witnesses:
