Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOPKIN J. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nanticoke, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in the construction of picks.
The improvement relates primarily to miners picks, but need not be restricted to this particular use, and the object of the invention is to produce a light yet strong and durable pick including a socket having means for co-engaging with the pick for securely but removably sustaining the same thereon, so that a worn pick may be readily removed from the socket and replaced by another pick, while the worn pick is being sharpened. 7
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the drawings in detail and to Figs. 1 to 6 in particular, the numeral 10 designates a metallic stock. This stock has its outer end enlarged, providing the same with what I will term a head 11, the said head being elliptical in plan. The opposite end of the socket is slit longitudinally a determined distance providing the same with spring sides 12, each of the same having an opening therethrough designed to receive an element 13 that secures a handle 14: in the stock. The inner end of the stock is bored longitudinally to provide a socket for the handle, as will, of course, be under stood, and the outer end of the head 11 is provided with an elliptical depression forming the same with what I will term a pocket and which is designated by the numeral 15, and the inner straight wall of the pocket is centrally provided with a threaded orifice 16. The flange 17 surrounding the pocket is centrally provided with alining longitudinal and transverse notches 18 and 19 respectively.
The pick is indicated by the numeral 20 and has its central or eye portion 21 of an elliptical formation so that the same will be snugly received in the pocket. The pick, to the opposite sides of its eye portion 21 is designed to be received in the longitudinal notches 18, and the said central portion of the pick is provided with transverse lugs 22 that are designed to be received in the transverse notches 19 of the head. The eye in the central portion of the pick is comparatively small and is arranged opposite the threaded orifice 16 in the inner wall of the pocket. Arranged over the center of the pick and contacting with the flange 17 on the head 11 of the stock 10 is a cap plate 23 shaped to conform to the shape of the head. The
cap plate is provided with a central opening and through this opening as well as through the eye of the pick and engaging the threads of the orifice 16 is the shank 24: of a headed member 25. The head of the memher 25 is kerfed so that the same may be readily screwed in the orifice to bind the cap plate against the outer face of the heat and outer face of the eye or central portion of the pick.
The pick is firmly supported in the stock. but by removing the member 23 and the cap plate the said pick, should the same become worn or otherwise damaged, may be readily removed from the stock for repairs and another pick may be arranged on the stock. With my construction picks of various sizes and shapes may be readily secured to or removed from the stock, so that various classes of work may be readily accomplished with out necessitating the requirement of several picks.
In the remaining figupes of the drawing the device is substantially similar to that previously described, the stock 26 having its inner end provided with a bore which is slitted to form the same with spring arms between which the handle 27 is received, the said handle being secured to the stock preferably by a removable element 28. The head portion 29 is provided with a pocket 30 and the flange surrounding the pocket is provided with two oppositely disposed longitudinal notches 31. The center or widened eye portion 32 is received in the pocket and What may be termed the blades of the pick, to the opposite sides of the center portion are re ceived in the notches 31. A cap plate 33 is arranged over the outer end of the head of the stock to inclose the center portion of the pick in the pocket, and a removable securing element 34 passes through the cap plate, the center of the eye portion of the pick and enters a threaded orifice that communicates with the inner and straight wall of the pocket.
It is believed, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, the simplicity and advantages of the construction will be readily apparent without further detailed description.
