Description
May 9, 1944- 'r n; E.y HOWARD ICE SKATE Filed Oct. 9, 1942 i I Inventor l FlcmZa/wwA/m' Patented May 9, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ICE SKATE Richard Edward Howard, St. Paul, Minn. Application October 9, 1942, Serial No. 461,463
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in ice skates, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character wherein the blade or runner may be expeditiously removed and replaced when desired.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide an ice skate of the aforementioned character comprising novel means for securing the removable blade or runner in position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide anice skate of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, light in weight, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of an ice skate constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially 4on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4- is a view in vertical longitudinal section through the blade securing means.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a tubular rail I of suitable metal. Substantially conical brackets 2 secure the rail I in position beneath a plate 3 on a suitable shoe 4. The tubular rail I has formed longitudinally in its lower portion a slot 5.
The tubular rail I slidably receives a removable metallic rod 6 which constitutes what may be considered the back of an integral blade or y runner 1. The slot 5 in the tubular rail I accommodates the runner 1.
Projecting longitudinally from the rear end of the tubular rail I is an integral, externally threaded segmental neck 8. The rod 6 is provided, on its rear end, with an integral shank 9 which is engaged in the segmental neck 8 and which comprises an enlarged, threaded lower portion I0 the threads of which constitute continuations of the threads on said neck. A removable cap I I is screwed on the threads of the elements 8 and l0.
It will thus be seen that an ice skate has been provided wherein the blade or runner may be expeditiously removed and replaced when desired. To remove the blade 1, it is only necessary to unscrew the cap II from the elements 8 and I0. When the cap II is in position it constitutes a positive connection between the blade 1 and the tubular rail I. The construction and arrangement is such that longitudinal movement of the blade 1 relative to the tubular rail I` in either direction is impossible.
It is believed that the many advantages of an ice skate constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. An ice skate of the character described cornprising a tubular rail having a longitudinal slot therein, a removable rod mounted in the rail, a blade integral with the rod and extending through the slot, and a cap threadedly connected to the rod and to the` rail for securing said rod in position in said rail.
2. An ice skate of the character described comprising a tubular rail having a longitudinal slot therein, a removable rod mounted in the rail, a blade on said rod extending through the slot, a neck projecting from one end of the tubular rail, `a shank projecting from the corresponding end of the rod, and a removable cap screwed on the neck and the shank for securing the rod to the rail,
3. An ice skate comprising a tubular rail, said rail having a longitudinal slot therein, an externally threaded neck of substantially segmental cross section projecting longitudinally from one end of the rail, a removable rod mounted in the rail, a blade on said rod extending through the slot, a shank on one end of the rod engaged in the neck, said shank including an enlarged portion comprising threads constituting a continuation of the threads on the neck, and a removable cap screwed on the neck and the shank for securing the rod in position in the tubular rail.
