RATCHET PLATE AND DIE.
Application led October 15, 1919. Serial No. 336,725.
To all lLal/m t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, Armin E. KOPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Middletown, in the county of Harrison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet Plates and Dies, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to tools, and more particularly to ratchet plates and dies.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed durable and eflicient device of this class, in which the dies may be readily removed and changed when desired.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Fig. 6 is a similar view taken through one of the casing sockets.
In the embodiment illustrated, the tool constituting this invention comprises a circular casing 1 having sleeves or sockets 2 extending radially therefrom at dia-metrically opposite points and which communicate with the interior of the casing.
Handle members 4 are mounted in the sockets 2, and each has laterally extending wings 3. A bore 4a is arranged longitudinally therein and enlarged at its front end to form a chamber 4b for a pawl 6 which is carried by a rod 5 mounted in the bore 4a. The bore 4a is longer than the rod 5 -and has a coiled spring 7 in its inner end which bears against the rod 5 and exerts its tension to project pawl 6 into the casing 1 for a purpose presently to be described. Each rod 5 has an arm 8 extending laterally therefrom, which carries at its outer end a knurled head 9 and which is designed to be oper-` ated to move the rod rearwardly against the tension of the spring 7 when itis desired to retract pawl 6 into chamber 4".
Each handle 4 has a bayonet or L-shaped slot 10 opening through one side wall, and communicating with the bore 4a at the point where the rod operating finger 8 is located, said linger extending through said slot and being designed to be turned into the transversely arranged arm l()a thereof when rod 5 is retracted and thereby hold said rod in retracted position, and thereby prevent the pawl 6 from engaging the ratchet wheel 11 now to be described.
The ratchet wheel 11 which is shown clearly in Fig. 4 is mounted to tit within and rotate in the casing 1, and is shown annular in form to receive a die 15. This ratchet wheel 11 has a plurality of radially extending peripheral teeth 12 arranged to provide spaces 13 between them, into which the dogs 6 are designed to enter for locking the ratchet wheel in adjusted position. These dogs 6 are oppositely beveled and are designed to turn the ratchet wheel in opposite directions, one only being in operative position at one time, the other being held retracted in the manner above described.
The die 15 which is designed to fit within the ratchet wheel 11 is equipped with radially extending, diametrically disposed lugs 16, designed to enter similarly shaped apertures 14 in the wheel 11.
The die 15, as shown in Fig. 2 tapers to ward one end, and at its larger end has an annular grooves 17 which registers with the taper or conical part 18 in the inner face of the ratchet wheel 11, said groove and conical part being designed to receive a spring clamping wire 19 which is in the form of a split ring and when placed in said position,`
will securely hold the die engaged with the ratchet wheel. A recess 20 is formed in the ratchet wheel 11 to facilitate the entrance of a tool under the wire 19 to provide for the removal of the wire when it is desired to remove the die. When this wire is removed the die will drop out, and may be replaced by another if desired.
In the use of this tool, the die 15 having been placed within the ratchet wheel, and
secured by the Wire 19, in the manner above described, one of the dogs 6 is locked out of engagement With the Wheel by the pin and slot connection above described, and. the ratchet Wheeland die carried thereby may then be rotated. If desired to dispense with the double movement of the ratchet, both dogs may be placed in locked engagement with the ratchet Wheel.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying dran'- ings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and While I have described the principle of operation of the invention together With the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are Within the scope of the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tool o-f the class described comprising a casing having socket-like sleeves extending radially therefrom, handles mounted in said sleeves and having bores extending longitudinally thereof and communicating with said casing, an annular ratchet Wheel mounted in said casing and having an opening therethrough which tapers toward one end, a die having a. tapered portion to lit in said opening and a second oppositely tapered portion, said Wheel having a groove adjacent its larger end and a small split ring clamp in said groove abutting on said second ta! pered portion of the die to lock said die in place.
