BUNDLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11116 1'7, 1919,
' Application filed. February 6, 1919. Serial No. 275,327.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRAMMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Haverhill, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bundling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a form of clamping or binding device, primarily designed and adapted for use in shoe factories to bind together, in a bundle, a stack of shoe uppers, before they are fitted or assembled.
It has been common practice for shoe cutters, after having finished cuttinga certaln lot of upper pieces, to tie these pieces in a bundle with twine, so that they may be read ily carried to another portion of the factory, without being disarranged or lost. A considerable expense for twine is thus involved, aside from difficulties arising through the breaking open of the bundles, which sometimes occurs.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction with which a stack of shoe upper pieces, or like articles, may be readily clamped together, and which may be used repeatedly for this purpose, and will not be likely to be injured by the ordinary wear and tear of factory use.
I accomplish this object by the means shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
As shown in the drawing, the device c0mprises a bottom member a and a top member I), each consisting of an oblong or rectangular shaped wire frame, the side portions thereof being parallel and spaced apart a suitable distance, according to the material to be held thereby. The Wires of which the frame are constructed are stiff, so that they cannot be bent readily. The end portions of the 'bottom fram a are formed to provide ears 0 and d at the middle thereof, and two sections of chain 6 and f of similar length,
are permanently attached thereto, respectively, the length of said chains being suflicient for all requirements. The chain c, which is attached to ear 0 at one end, is also permanently attached at its opposite end, to a similar ear 9 formed in the middle of one end-portion of the upper frame I), and a hook it is formed by the end link of the chain at this point, which is adapted to be engaged in any one of the links thereof, so that it may, in eifect, be temporarily shortened.
A short prong or finger i is formed on the opposite end portion of the upper frame I), which is arranged to be engaged in any one of the links of the other chain section f.
In using the device, the upper leather pieces are laid in a stack on the lower frame a, as they are cut, and, when the required number to be bound together have been thus arranged, the frame I; is laid on top of the stack and pressed down and the chain 6 is shortened by means of the hook it to any extent which may be necessary. The opposite end of the top frame is then pressed down and the chain f is drawn up until the stack is firmly clamped between the frames, and then one of the links of the chain f is caught on the prong 2', so that the frames will be held together in the position to which they were pressed.
The wires of the frames will thus be pressed to an extent into the yielding stack of leather or like material as indicated in Fig. 3, so that the latter will be securely held therebetween and may be carried about in any convenient manner without danger of breakin open the bundle.
As all the parts are permanently connected, there is no danger of any parts being lost or misplaced when the device is not in use, or is being moved about the factory, and when not in use it occupies but little space. It is also of durable construction, so that the probability of its being damaged is remote.
I claim:
A. bundling device of the character described comprising a pair of oblong frames of stiff wire, a chain section permanently connected at one end to one frame and at the opposite end to the other frame at correframes at the opposite end, and a projection sponding ends of said frames, a hook concorrespondingly arranged on the other frame nected to one of said frames at the point at and adapted to be engaged With the links of 10 which said chain section is connected thereto, said last named chain section.
said hook being ar anged to be engaged with In testimony whereof, I have signed my different links of said chain section, a chain name to this specification. section permanently connected to one of said VILLIAM BRAMMER.
