Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented J an. 2 1917.
Applicntiiin filed Sum: 1a, 191;. Serial No. 845,461.
To all whom it m 3 concern:
Be it known %litt I, REUBEN 1).; Born, a citizen of the nitcd States; residing at Gettysburg, in the county of Act-toms and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new, and useful In'iprovemcnts in Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to implements for bundling corn shocks, and more particularly to that class of implements known as tying implements.
The object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel tying implement, said tyin g implement being provided with an improved means whereby to facilitate the manipulation of the same. i
Another object of my inventirni is to provide a tying implement which in construction, is simple and effective, and is so formed as to permit the same to be used as a. husking peg if so desired. previous to the tying operation.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides preferably in the construction, con'ilnnation and arrangement of parts as set forth hereinafter in the annexed specification and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing in which 2- I Fi urc 1. is a perspective view of a corn huskmg'z peg constructed in accordance with the preferred form of my invention. Fi
2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the free ends of the cord or twine. hereinbeforementioned, secured thereto. Fig; 3 is a cross section of the hashing finger or blade showing the contour of the same.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the various views of the drawin Referring; more particularly to the drawings ,in which the preferred form .of my invention is illustrated. I provide a bar 1 of metal or other suitable material. l'iaving one end thereof formed to provide a, finger 52, the opposite end thereof heing provided with. a handle, which in the present instance comprises a ring 3 integrally formed with the bar l. as is more vlcarly shown in'Fig. 2, the ring: 33 is suz ported from the bar 1 at a point slightly below the center of the ring, thus allowing of the comfortable engagement of the finger of the users hand therew ith, as will he more fully set forth hereina is shown to advantage in Fig. 3, the
Tying caved as indicated.
providing a. thumb engaging. portion which" assists inthe n'uinipulation of the device" should hclof a size which two fingers of the users hand. The index finger 2. is preferably concavo-co nv 'ex' as shown at '2 throughout its longitudinal axis, whereby to assist the {same to perform its functions.
To facilitate the manipulation of thefinger 2, I provide laterally extending projections 4 and 5 upon the opposite faces of As is shown to advantage in Fig. 1,. one
face of the projection l is preferably com at 6, this-I pro ection .4:
The lateral rrojectionfi formed on. the opposite face of the has: 1 adapted to he received hetwccn. the tin of the users hand, and is so positioned as to assist the projec; tion 4; in perforn'iing its intended functions.
For the purpose of convenience in show,-
inn. the device has been shown in Figs. 1 and in a n oppo iteposition relative to its upper and lower sides to which the same would be, when in use, that is,. the device would. he turned completely over and it hashecn found in use that the most convenient manner in which to manipulate the some is to insert the little finger of the right or left hand into the ring or handle 3, allowing the other three fingers of the hand to engage the bar 1 and the projection 5, the thumb of the hand be ing adapted to engage the face 6 of the projection 4 upon the opposite side .of theloar 1. It has be n found in practice that the space between the projection. 5 and the ring 3 will readily receive finger of ,the users hand being adapted to engage the bar 1 on the other side of the projection 5. From the ahove it is thought that the manner in which my invention is adapted to be used will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
I provide slots 7 and 8 inv the bar 1, said slots ext-ending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bar 1. Said slots 7 and 8 are provided with laterally extending slots 9 and 10, said slots 9 and 10 eonu-nunicating with the slots 7 and 8 respectively, and extending laterally of the longitudinal axis of the bar 1, and opening in the'opposite edges 11. and 12 respectively of the bar 1. ach of the slots 9 and 10 has one of the walls thereof beveled as shown at 13-to facilitate the removal. of the cord or twine as hereinafter more fully set forth. The function of the bar 1., and. intermediate the ends tl'iGlQOf'-'.
BEST AVAILABLE p.
14 indicates the rec ends of a. cord, each of said free ends 14 having knots 15 tied therein, to prevent disengagement of the same from the slots 7 and 8 when it is desired to .tie the said free ends together. Another imortant feature of the iroiections at and 5 resides in the fact that when tying the free ends of the cord or twine together the said pro]ections l and 5 provide abutments for I facilitating the tying of a double knot in the cord or twine, and when the same is tied,
the point at which the ends are joined will come. in contact with 'one of 'th abutments and a finger of the hand ma y be placed upon the cord or twine at this pointand hold the same while tying a double knot therein. hen the ends of the cord or twine have been tied the same will readily spring from the slots 7 and 8 and disengage from the same.
From the above description taken in c0nnection with the accompanying drawings it will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art that I have provided a simple, cheap and durable device of the above character which'can be used in a number of phases, and I desire that it be understood that I inay"nl'ake such char; in the details of construction thereof which shall-not depart front the spirit and seopeofihe appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, Wh'at I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a bar, lateral extensions arranged upon the opposite faces of said bar intermediate the ends thereof, a plurality of distorted recesses formed in the bar and opening on the opposite edgesthereof, said recesses being disposed upon either side of the lateral extensions and adapted to receive the extremities of a tying member to retain the same while tying.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a bar, lateral extensions formed upon the opposite sides of said bar substantially midway the length thereof, a pluralitjv of distorted recesses open in the opposite edges of the bar to receive a tying member, said lateral extensions serving as means on which the extremities of the tying member may be placed when completing a tying operation.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a bar having laterally oppositely disposed projections on the faces thereof, a plurality of substantially right angularly shaped recesses formed in the bar and opening on the opposite edges thereof and adja cent said projections to receive a tying member, said projections serving as means to hold a flexible tying element when tying.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of" two witnesses.
