GEORGE H. I-IOHNSBEEN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR 0F THREE-FIFTHS TO J. D. BROWN, 0]? MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
FACE-PLATE FOR VISE-JAWS.
Application filed January 4, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HOHNSBEEN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Plates for Vise-Jaws, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for mounting face plates of softer metal or other material upon the jaws of a vise, to the end that finished work placed in the vise will not be marred or otherwise damaged by pressure of the jaws thereon.
A further object is to provide a supporting means for these plates which will permit them to be easily mounted on the jaws and as readily removed, with a provision for substituting a new face plate for a worn or damaged one.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a view, partly in section, of the two jaws of a vise, with the invention applied;
Fig; 2 is a partial longitudinal section through a face plate, with a portion in full lines;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing the numeral 3 designates a fixed jaw and 4: a movable jaw of a vise of ordinary construction, the means for supporting the jaws and operating the movable jaw being omitted as they may be of any well known suitable form without affecting the invention. Each jaw is provided with a detachable face plate 18 made of rubber, fiber, or any other suitable material. This face-plate is attached to a plate 14. which has an upwardly extending flange 16 entering a slot 17 formed in the lower edge of the face-plate so as to permit the latter to be detached therefrom when necessary and replaced by another face-plate, and has also an outwardly or rearwardly extending flange 15 designed to rest upon the top of the vise Specification of Letters Patent.

jaw so as to suspend the face-plate from the jaw. The plate 14 has riveted or otherwlse attached to it a spring-plate 19 formed with rearwardly extending end flanges 20 designed to clasp the ends of the vise jaws so as to hold the face-plate to the jaw. This sprmg plate 19 is slightly projected from the face-plate or its supporting plate 14 from the middle portion of the spring plate toward its opposite endsso as to leave a space between the face-plate or its support ing plate and the spring plate to permit flexure of the spring plate in engagement of ts end flanges with the ends of the vise aw.
Under the construction described when the face-plate becomes worn or is to be replaced by another it is readily detached from its attaching plate, and when the face plate is to be used it is readily attached to and supported from the vise jaw by the overhanging flange 15 and the flanged or bent clasping ends of the spring plate 19.
I have illustrated and described with par-' ticularity the preferred details of the several parts but they can be varied without departing from the essential features of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a vise jaw, of a detachable facing-plate, a supportingplate to which the face-plate is separably attached, said supporting-plate being formed with a rearwardly extending flange to rest upon the vise jaw, and a spring-plate connected to the supporting-plate and spaced therefrom throughout a portion of its length and formed with rearwardly extending bent ends to clasp the ends of the vise-j aw.
2. The combination with a vise jaw, of a detachable facing-plate formed with a recess extending upwardly from its lower edge, a supporting-plate formed at its lower end with an upwardly extending flange to enter the recess of the facing-plate and having at its upper end a rearwardly extending flange to rest upon the vise jaw, and a spring clasping plate connected with the supporting plate and having rearwardly bent ends to clasp the ends of the vise jaw.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19" day of December, 1917.
GEORGE H. HOHNSBEEN.
