APPLICATION FILED SEPT-21,1918.

ALBIN J. JOHNSON, 0F DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
LOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBIN J. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St, Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
in cylindrical openings of medium size bored in the door very quickly by an anger and "bit and thus eliminate the necessity of mortising the edge of the door for the lock and so save in time required to install the lock and in expense necessary for expert workman.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, particularly pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a portion of a door with the improved lock in position thereon.
Fig. 2 is a-perspective view of a portion of the door before applying the lock showing the openings which have to be bored therein from the side and from the edge.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the knob shaft.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the improved lock, a portion of the latch mechanism being shown in section.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the latch bolt on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view on line 6-6 of the same figure.
Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional detail showing the two parts of the lock bolt.
In the drawing, 10 indicates a door of which 11 is the stile on the outer edge on which, as is usual, the lock and latch are mounted. The look as an entirety, shown in Fig. 4, comprises a thin plate 12 to the inner side of which near the top is secured one end of a tubular member 13, closed at its opposite or inner end by a head 14. Through the plate 12 in alinement with the bore of member 13 is formed a circular opening 15 for the passage of the latch bolt 16 slidable Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11119 1'7, 1919. Application filed September 27,1918. Serial No. 255,946.
longitudinally in the member 13. The latch bolt is cylindrical in form and has its outer end beveled as usual at 17. Through the inner end of the bolt are formed two intersecting elongated slots, one 18 being vertithereon by screws each entering one of a serles of openings 23 in the shaft. A coil spring 241 is placed in the inner end of the member 13 and bearing upon the bolt 16, normally holds it in its outermost position as shown, with the inner end of slot 19 pressing on knob shaft 20 and the studs 21 in contact with the similar end of slot 18. A horizontal slot 25 is made in the member 13 in longitudinal alinement with slot 19 .for the passage of knob shaft 20 which is held by the tension of spring 2 1 acting on bolt 16, in opposite ends of the slots, that is at the inner end of slot 19 and the outer end of slot 25. r Y
The lock bolt is represented as of rectangular cross section, slidable through an opening 27 of similar shape in the plate 12, and operated by key mechanism of any approved sort contained within a barrel shaped casing 28. The bolt is made in two longitudinal parts 26, 26 connected by a screw 29 passing through the overlapping ends of said parts at the outer edge of the casing 28 which may be notched, as at 30, for ready insertion and removal of the screw.
A look such as described is simple in con struction and strong enough for the purpose required and can be installed on the door with little trouble, in a short space of time and without the employment of skilled labor. Two holes 31 and 32 are bored in the edge of the door stile 11, one above the other, the distance separating the holes being governed by the distance between the centers of latch bolt 16 and lock bolt 26. A hole 33 for the knob shaft 20 is bored through the stile 11 from the side in line with and intersecting hole 31 back from the edge of the door a distance equal to the distance between the outer face of plate 12 and the center of shaft 20. Directly below the hole 33 and intersecting hole 32 there is bored into the door from the inner side but not through it, a
.o'f'the holes are round, and can be-made with placed in the member 13 followed by the latch bolt 16. One of the knobs 22 is removed from the shaft 20 and the latter inserted through the hole 33 in the door, after pressing the latch bolt inward as far as it will go to bring the slots 19 and 25 in line, so
that the lugs 21 on the shaft, when turned into horizontal position, may pass through said slots and be turned into the vertical slot 18. By giving the shaft a quarter turn and releasing the bolt, the spring 24: will force the bolt outward and theendof slot 18 into engagement with the lugs 21, so that by turning the shaft in either direction the bolt will be retracted within the member 13. The lock casing 28 is now placed in the opening 34 and the outer part of the lock bolt 26 slid through opening 27 in the plate 12 and along the hole 32 until its inner end overlaps the inner part of the bolt carried by the casing '28, whereupon the screw 29 is passed through and connects the parts. It will be understood that the escutcheon plates are to be positioned and fastened before the knobs 22 :are finally secitredto the shaft 20, as is usual,
thus completing the mounting of the lock.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be consid- 'eredzthe preferred, or approved, form of my pedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim. I 1
Havmg'fully descrlbed my lnventionwhat I cla1m as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a lock of the class described, the combination with the door stile provided in its edge with two horizontal holes and in its body with a-hole transverse toand intersectmg the uppermost of said .edgeiholes and another in line with the lowermost thereof and counter-bored at one end into a round opening; of a latch case 111 the upper edge hole, a
latch bolt therein, a knob spindle through the uppermost transverse hole engaging said latch bolt, a lock casing in saidround opening, the casing being notched at one edge, a two-part lock bolt eXtendingfrOm the opening out the lower edge hole, the parts lapping each other, and a screw passlng through said notch and connecting the parts where they lap.
In testimony whereof I my signature 1 in presenceof two witnesses. ALBIN J. JOHNSON.
