Description
-any nature which shoul UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE' FRANIS HOGAN, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
nNvnLor.
To all whom t may concern Be it knownthat I, GEORG F. HOGAN,
residing at Chica o, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois,
full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled iii- 5 the art to which 4it appertainsl to make and usetlie same. The present invention relates to envelope,
particularly adapted to be fastened .to a
package or case for-holding inclosuresV relating` packing lists, directions or memoranda of d accompanying the shipment.
It'is an object. of thev invention -to 'pro duce for this purpose anl envelop which may erations, and which when 'iso ashioned is' Q. adapted to hold inclosures in a water-,tight manner, so that-.there is no dangerof the" 'contents becoming wet -if thev package or vcase is exposed to` rain.
4 and'end f iap .5. One side flap is piOVided be fashioned from Ya single blank .of 4miiterial by simple folding;r and asting op- Tlie material of which the envelop is' formed is preferably treated with a water-proofing substance, and
all permanently overlapping` portions of the envelop areunited by an adhesive that is impervious to water. As an aid for fasteningthe envelop to a package or case, it is--provided with marks to show the points at which tacks should be applied.
The particular nature of the invention, as
well as other objectsand advantages thereof will appear more clearly from a description of a preferred embodiment thereof as shownin the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the envelop in finished condition; Fig. 2 shows the blank of material before being folded Fig. .3 is a central longitudinal section of the finished envelop on an enlarged scale, and Fig. l isa similar' transverse sectionalview.
The envelop of the present invention is formed from a blank 1 of any desired ma,
terial cut to the shape shown in Fig. 2 and preferably printed and scored along the lines 2 between theback 3 and the side flaps with an eyelet fastener 6v of any convenient form. The portion 7 of the blank which forms the closure flap of the envelop is provided with a similar fastening device 8 having the usual tying string 9'atta'ched there- Specification of Letters Patent. to. Printed on the blank-as at the points 10 are dots o r other :characters to indicate thepointsv at which tacks-should be applied l to fasten the envelop to a package or case.
vThe blank described above is formed into .an envelop by first `folding along the longitudinalscorings 2 with the edge of the side Hap 4 carrying the fastener 6 overlying the edge of kthe other side flap, and these flaps are united `by Vany suitableadhesive, pref-` erably one that' is` impervious to water.

the envelop throu h'thefeyelet of the fastenerti. [The endV ap 5, isthenfolded over and stuck-to `the other "flaps as .indicated in Fig. 1, and if y desired, aneyelet 11 Vmay .be inserted at this""en'dv ofthe envelop to more securelyf-hold'-,tlieVfolds ofV material togetherb Thedndicating niark-s vlilas wellas any i'descriptive mat-ter or directions which I should beapplied to the face of the envelop may all be printed on one side ofthe blank,
and the latter is so folded that these marks I and the printing, as well as the fastening device 6A are all on theupper side of the envelopwhen itis ready to be applied to a package or case. vAfter an inclosure has been placed inthe envelop, the latter is folded along the line 12 which is roperly vscored for this purpose, so that the old propassed through` the envelop at those two points will be covered and protected by the fiap. Consequently, even though the exposed tacks may become loosened and fall out, the envelop willlstill remain securely fastened to the package by the two covered tacks and an additional tack may be placed What I claim is: v l. An envelop adapted for attachment to a package "where it may be exposed tothe weather, comprising a body portion having a double fold at its open end to prevent'moisture from reaching the contents of the envelop, the upper side of said fold being extended to form a flap having a fastening device applied thereto, a cooperating fastening device attached to the body portion, and
v distinctive marks on the upper side of the body portion tol show the points at wh1ch I 10 the envelop should be tacked to the package, certain of the tacks applied at such points being covered by the double fold and protected thereby. v
2. An envelop adapted for attachment in an exposedposition'to a-package, comprising al back member and pairs of side and endv flaps integrall j connected thereto,- the side j flaps being fol ed over one upon the other in overlapping relation against the back member and pasted together along their overlapping surfaces, and/one end flap being folded'f'- over and pasted against the adjacent I portions ofthe folded side `flaps to close the envelop at that end; an eyelet at said closed end inserted through the folded end flap, the
back member and the interposed overlapping portions of the side flaps; 'an eyelet fastener attachedto the overlapping portion of one side ap in position to overlie the adjacent portion ofthe other side ap so as to ybeelosed by the vlatter .portion-against*4 the passage. of moisture therethrough 5 and to` be secured by the paste between said portions;
land a coperating `fastening device on 4the iiapat the open end'of the envelop.
lapping surfaces, and one end Hap being folded over and pasted against the adjacent portions of the folded side iaps to close the envelop at that end; an eyelet at said closed end inserted through the folded end flap, v i
the back member and the interposed overlapping portions of the side flaps; an eyelet fastener attached to the overlapping portion of one side flap in position to overlie the adjacent portion of the other side flap so as Y to be closed by the latter portion against the passage of moistureI therethrough -and to be secured by the paste between said portions; a
double fold provided at the open end of the' envelop to prevent `moisture from reaching the contents of the envelop and formed in part by the flap at that end; a fastening device attached tothe last-named end iiap for cooperation with the eyeletfastener; and
distinctive markson the outer faces 'of said side flaps and the Virst-named end ap toshow .the points at which tacks should be applied to hold the envelop in place on the package, the tacks applied at certain of said points being covered by the double fold and protected hereby. 4. V
In testimonv whereof I affix m signature.
