IMPROVEMENT EN TAILORS CRAYGNHOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,634, dated August 20, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Self-Sharpening Drafting Apparatus, invented by J OIIN A. GOOCH, of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved apparatus for holding crayons for tailors use in drafting patterns, garments, Sac.; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the case, which is made open at one edge, and ci' such a capacity as to receive the marking lead or crayon. B is a slide placed in the interior of the case A, and having' a nut, C, formed upon one side, which enters a groove or enlargement, a', formed upon one side of the case A, and in which is swiveled the screw "D, which passes through the nut G, so that by turning the screw l) in one direction the slide B may be pushed outward to push out the lead or cra-yon as it wears away, and by turning the said screw in the otherdirectiou the slide B may be moved inward to allow the lead or crayon to be pushed into the said case. The lead or crayon is kept from dropping out or" the case A by the spring E, which bears against its side. may be cut out of the solid body of the case A, as shown in Figs 2 and 3, or it may be made separate and attached to said case. F is the lead or crayon, which is made thin to adaptit for use in the case A without requiring thesaid case to be made so thick as to be inconvenient in use or in. carrying it in the pocket. The lead or crayon F is made of such a thickness as to give the mark required for ordinarymarking or drafting when used squarely upon its edge. A finer mark may be made by holding the apparatus inclined so as t0 mark upon a corner of its edge. By holding the apparatus, while using it, inclined to one side for a While, and then inclined to the other side for a while, the wear will keep it sharpened, and the use of a knife for sharpening it will never be required.
Having thus described my invention, l cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- enty The case A provided with a groove or enlargement, a, a slide, B,nut C, swivcled screw D, and spring E to adapt it for receiving and holding the lead or crayon F, substantially as herein shown and described.
