To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. MGIIENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomsburg, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainl new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.

This invention relates to brushes, but more particularly to a street broom or brush in which a heavy, stiff liber is employed.

The invention has for its object to provide improvements in brushes of the aforementioned type, so that a more perfect article is obtained.

It has been difficult to construct brushes of this type having the liber full at the ends so that the ends of the brush are effective.

. This invention consists in a construction which insures the proper distribution of the fiber at the ends, so that the liber will be permanently secured to the brush and against displacement and dropping out. The invention also consists in the ferrule arrangement for the handle, so that the ferrule and handle may be reversed with relation to the brush Y to insure even wear of the fiber, and which can be bodily removed from the brush when the same is worn out, and readily applicable to a new brush; thus saving the ferrule, which under present practice is discarded and wasted when the brush is worn out.

Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a perspective view of a brush constructed in accordance with this invention: Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional` view. Fig. 4, is a detailed perspective view of the brush-block, metal cap and ferrule.

Fig. 5, is a diagrammatic view illustrating the mannerof distributing the brush fiber on the brush-block.

Fig. 8, is a longitudinal sectional view through the brush and form for forming the brush material and for retaining the same in proper relation to the metal cap while said cap is being secured on the brush.

In the drawings, 1 indicates the brush, 2 the brush-block, 3 the metal cap, and 4 the handle-ferrule. I5 indicates the side-brush ber, and 6 the end-brush fiber.

The brush-block 2 in this type of brush is elongated as shown, and in my construetion the top-end portions of the block are stepped or depressed, as at 7, resulting in the formation of shoulders 7a, the purpose of which will appear later.

In the construction of the brush, a forln 8 is employed which receives the metal cap 3 as shown in Fig. 8. The side-brush material 5 is placed across the form 8 (Fig. 5) and the end-brush-ber 6 is wrapped with wire 9, and nailed to theblock 2, said endfiber 6 lying within the depressions 7 in the top face of the block (Fig. 6). When in this position, the block 2 is forced into the form, or reversely, the form may be pressed over the block 2 and fiber 5 and 6. In either instance, the form 8 folds the sidediber 5 down against the sides of the block as shown in Fig. 5, and simultaneously folds the endber 6 over and around the ends of the block, (Fig. 8) so as to distribute the end-fiber evenly and insure full endsto the brush.

When the brush is fullywithin the form 8, as shown in Fig. 8, the metal cap 3 is nailed to the block 2 through openings or spaces provided in the form; thus securing the cap on the brush so that upon removal from the form, the brushis in finished condition.

The ferrule 4 is constructed of two pieces of sheet metal 4 and 4 riveted together at 10, the respective members having vertical portions 11 and 12 which straddle the brush 1, said portions as well as the brush being provided with complementary bolt-holes to receive removable bolts 13. The member 4 of the ferrule is formed to provide a socket 14 to receive a brush-handle 14 as shown.

By this construction the ferrule 4 may be reversed from time to time in relation to the brush in order to insure even wear of the fiber, and consequent efciency and long life, while this also provides for the entire removal of the ferrule and bolts for applicaa berequipped block adapted for theat-` tachinent of a handle thereto, said block provided with longitudinal depressions in its top-end portions, longitudinally disposed fiber layersembedded and secured in said depressions with their inner ends abutting the resulting shoulders thereof, said ber layers4 extending downwardly along the ends or' said block and forming the end portions of the brush, additional fiber layers ex- Copies f this patentmay be obtained for tending across the top of saidrbloek andV overlying the upper surface of said end-V forming` brushv portions "and .extendingdownwardly of said block and forming the lateral brush portions in 'y continuation of said end brush-forming portions, and a -m'etal cap receiving said block and the upper.
