To all whom it may concern:
Be it known, that I, MONTAGUE TABOR PIoKs'roNn, of- 64 Alexandra road, Hampstead, county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picking Apparatus for Weaving- Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looms for weaving and particularly to that type of loom in which the propulsion of the shuttle is effected pneumatically.
Prior to the date of my invention it has been proposed to use air compressin apparatus in some cases comprising a cy lnder and piston, the latter being operated within the cylinder by the aid. of gear wheels or suitably sha ed cams with the object of providing a sucient pressure of air to propel the shuttle from one side of the loom to the .other and for drawing the shuttle to the extreme outer end of-the shuttle'box by air sucd in position within the box by means of a catch device. Inother types of apparatus of the pneumatic kind it is diificult owing to the varying weight of the shuttle and weft to insure that after each pick the shuttle shall come to rest at the inner end of the shuttle box or tube; when the shuttle is loaded it will usually reach its proper position, but when the weft is becoming exhausted'the shuttle usually fails to reach such position;
The object of the resent invention is to overcome this objection by provlding 1m:

It will be understood that these parts are duplicated on the opposite side of the loom, the cams being set opposite each other, that is to say displaced by 180. When the parts are in the positions shown in the drawing the shuttle S is up against the buffer A at the inner end of the tube A, the piston C in the cylinder C is moving over its bottom center being operated from the cam E through the parts E, D, D, and D, and the reed is just beating up the fell of the cloth.
As the cam E rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow the arm D is rocked about its pivot owing to the alterations in the position of the bowl D relatively to the cam shaft due to the shape of the cam groove When the cam has rotated through 43 from the position shown the bowl lies in the cam groove in the position indicated by the radial line 2 during this movement the shuttle has been propelled from the box; the piston has been moved up to the top of its stroke, moving over the top center; and the reed has been caused to approach the bottom or rearwardend of its stroke.
Further movement of the cam shaft through approximately 245 brings the bowl D into the position in the groove E indicated by the radial'line 3 on the cam: the piston C has durin this movement come downward to the mi dle of its stroke where it comes to rest..
During a proximately thenext 30 of movement 0 the cam shaft, that is to say, while the bowl D is brought from position 3 to position 4 in the cam groove there is no movement of the piston; during this period of dwell the shuttle S (having been, in the meantime, propelled from the other side of the loom) reenters the tube A and,
meeting a s'tatlonary column or cushion of air, gradually comes to rest in a position within the tube A that'depends to a great extent upon the quantity of weft in the shuttles; the reed meanwhile is moving toward the fell of the cloth.
Continued movement of the cam shaft leading against rebound, until the continued move ment of the cam shaft brings the parts again to the first position as indicated by full lines.
' While the bowl D is moving from osition 2 to position 3 in the cam groove it will he understood that the corresponding bowl in the cam on the opposite side of the loom passes through posit-ions corresponding to 3, 4, 1 and 2 of the cam shown.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. An improved pneumatic picking apparatus for looms, comprising a tubular shuttle box, a cylinder communicating therewith, a l'eciprm-able piston working in said cylinder, and actuating means for imparting forward and return movements to said piston, said actuating means including means for temporarily interrupting return movement of the piston at a point between its extremes of reciprocation, whereby a stationary air cushion 15 provided within said box to arrest movement of an incoming shuttle.
2. An 1mproved pneumatic picking apparatus for looms, comprising a tubular shuttle box, acylinder communicating therewith, a reciprocable piston Working in said cylinder, and actuating means --for imparting forward and return movements to said piston, said actuating means including means for temporarily interrupting return movement of the piston at a polnt between its extremes of reciprocation, whereby a'stationary air cushion is provided within said box to arrest movement of an incoming shuttle, said actuating means also having means for subsequently continuing the return movement of the piston to suck the shuttle into position to be expelled. An improved pneumatic-picking apparatus for looms, comprising a tubular shuttle box, a cylinder communicating therewith, a reciprocable piston working in said cylinder, a cam connected with said piston for imparting forward and return movements thereto, said cam having a portion for temporarily interrupting return movement of the piston at a point between its extremes of V reciprocation, whereby a stationary air cushion is provided withln the box, said cam also havln a portion to subsequently withdraw the piston to suck the shuttle into position to be expelled, said cam also having a portion to move the piston in a direction to expel the shuttle.
