To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrH F. BnNorr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sanford, county of York, State of Maine, have invented an Improvement in Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. i
This invention relates to looms and has for its object to provide an improved loom with a novel and simplified mechanism for vibrating the lay and operating the picker sticks.
In accordance with my invention the movement of the lay is secured through the medium of a cam mounted on a cam shaft instead of by means of a crank shaft as is the usual custom and the cam mechanism is arranged so that it not only operates to vi brate the lay but also affects the operative movement of the picker sticks.
The means for operating the lay is also constructed so that the lay has a cushioned movement as the reed engages the fell of the cloth, thereby beating up the weft without subjecting the warp threads tonndue strain.
In order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described after which the novel features will be pointedout in the appended claims. Q

I have shown at 1 a 100m frame w 'ch may have any suitable or usual construction, and at 2 I have illustrated the lay which is carried by the usual lay swords 3 that are mounted on the rock shaft 4. The lay 2 has the usual shuttle box 5 at each end and each end of the rock shaft 4 has mounted thereon the usual picker stick 6 by which the shuttle is thrown acrossthe lay.
- I My present invention relates to an improved means for operating the lay and the picker stick. The lay is given its vibrating movement by means of cams carried by a. cam shaft 7 and thesecams are also provided with means-for giving the picker stick 6 its operative movement.
Mounted on the cam shaft 7 are two cams 8, one at each end thereof, said cams engaging rolls 9 carried by arms 10 that extend rearwardly from the lay structure. The cams 8 are each provided with a high portion 11 and a low portion 12 and the relative position of the roll 9 and the cam is such that when the roll 9 is in engage- :ment with the low portion 12 of the cam as shown in full lines Fig. 2 the lay will be in its rearward position while when the cam has turned so as to bring the high portion ofthe cam underneath the roll the arm 10 will be raised thereby moving the lay forwardly into the dotted line position and giving said lay its forward beat. The cam 8 will preferably bea double cam having two high portions 11 and two low portions 12 so that the lay will be given two forward beats for each rotation of the cam shaft.
This cam 8 also operates to retract the lay from its forward to its rearward position and for this purpose I provide a swinging arm 13 which is pivoted to the loom frame at 14 and is provided with a. roll 15 at its end bearing against the cam 8, said arm 13 being connected to the lay structure by means of a spring 16. The relative positions of the rolls 9 and 15 is such that when one roll is on the low portion of the cam the other roll is on the high portion of the cam v I and vice versa. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section- When the cam 8 makes a quarter turn from the position shown in Fi 2 thereby to bring a high portion 11 un erneath the roll 9 and cause the lay to beat forwardly, a low portion 12 of the cam is brought into engagement with the roll 15 so that the arm 13 may swing forwardly. During the next uart'er revolution when the roll 9 is passing from a high portion 11 of the cam to a low portion 12the roll 15 will be engaged by a high portion of the cam and the backward movement of the arm 13 will act through the spring 16 to give the lay its backward movement.
As stated above I will preferably employ two cams, one at each end of the lay, said cams thus operating to give the lay. both its forward movement and its rearward movement.
I may, if desired, provide a yiel connection between the arm 10 and the lay structure, so that said arm can yield slightly when the roll 9 is passing over the portion of the cam thereby producing a cushioned forward movement in the lay.
The arm 10 is pivoted to the lay at 17 and is provided witha stop portion 18 which rests on an extension 19 extending rearwardly from the lay, said arm being held with the stop against the extension b means of a spring 20 which encircles a ho t 21that extends upwardly through the extension and stop 18. The spring 20 is relait will not tivel stiff so that ordinaril yieI but it does provide a sight yielding mpgement between the arm 10 and the lay st cture vsufiicient to give the lay a cushioned forward movement as the roll 9 is passing over a high point 11 of-the cam.
The cam 8 is also employed to give operative. movement to the picker stick. Each picker stick is provided with a lug stra 22 which is connected to a strap or other exible connection 23 that extends over a guide pulley 24 journalled on the loom frame and is connected to the end of an actuating lever 25 which extends rearwa'rdly and is pivoted to the loom frame at 26.
Each cam 8 is provided with a picking roll 27 which is adapted to engage a roll 28 on the corresponding lever 25'thereby to depress the lever as shown in Fig. 2 and give the picker stick 6 its forward movement through the flexible connection 23. Each cam 8 has a roll 27 thereon and, therefore, the corresponding picker stick is actuated once during each rotation of the cam shaft 7. The picldng rolls onthe two cams 8' at opposite ends of the shaft are oppositely situated so that during one half rotation of the shaft the picking roll at one end will actuate its plcker stick and during the other half rotation of said shaft the picking roll at the other end will actuate its picker stick. Hence at each rotation of the shaft 7 the la will make two beats and each icker stick will be actuated once. This re ative position of the two picking rolls 27 is shown in ig. 1 wherein the picking roll on the end of the shaft nearest the observer is shown at the rear of the cam and the other picking roll on the end of the shaft furthest from the observer is shown at the front.
The picking rolls 27 are preferably adjustably carried by the cam 8 so that the of the picking -roll can be adjusts position thereof may be adjusted to roperly time the actionof thepicker stick. ach plcking roll is shown as mounted on a stud 29 which is carried in a slot 30 formed in the cam member 8, said stud being held in adjusted sition by means of a clamp nut 31. The cam shaft may be driven in any suitable way- In the construction shown it is driven from a driving shaft 32 which extends from the front to the rear of the 100111 and is journalled in suitable bearings 33 carried by the loom frame. This shaft has the belt pulley 34 thereon by which it is operated and it is geared 'to the shaft 7 by means of suitable spiral gears 35.
I claim:

brating lay, of a pi er stick, a cam shaft and a cam thereon operating both to vibrate the lay and actuate the picker stick.
2. 4. In a loom, the combination with a vibrating lay, of a picker stick, an actuating lever connected to said picker stick, a cam for vibrating the lay and a picking roll carried by the cam and giving said actuating lever its 0 rative movement.
