Description

W. DE ROOY,
WRENCH. APPLICATION man AUG.2Z. 191s.
Patented J 11116 3, 191 9.
INVENTOR m: mums FEL'RS co PHDVU-LIYHOH \VASHING mu. 1:. c.
20 specified, will be apparent from the herein- WILLIAM Dr: BODY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1919.
Application filed August 27, 1918. Serial N 0. 251,606.
To all whom it may concern. 1 I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM on RooY, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, now residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful WVrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a wrench and embodies, in combination, a monkey-wrench and a Stilson or pipe-wrench, the movable jaw of the monkey-wrench being movable to different positions, with reference to the fixed jaw of the wrench, thereby adapting it for a much wider range of work than that'of the {common type monkey-wrench. Moreover, the fixed jaw of the wrench is an element common to both the monkey wrench and the pipe wrench. 1
Features of the invention other than those after detailed description taken in conjunction'with the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanyin drawings, I have illustrated onepractical form of the invention, but the construction shown therein is to .be understood as. illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.
Figure l is aside elevation of the wrench, showing the pipe 'jaws in closed position, and the movable jaw of the monl'iey-wrench so'positioned as to travel at right angles to the handle of thewrench';
Fig. 2 is also a side elevation of the wrench, showing the pipe jaws in open position, and the movable jaw of the monkeywrench so positioned as to travel in a direc-v tion in longitudinal alinement with the handle;
Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow appearing on said figure;
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on line H of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows associated with said line;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the movable jaw of the monkey-wrench;
Fig. 6 is a detail view, showing the mov able aw of the monkey-wrench, whenmounted as illustrated in Fig. 1, in closed position; and i 1 Fig. 7 is a detail view, showing the movable jaw of the monkey-wrench, when mounted as illustrated in Fig. 2, in closed position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the handle of the wrench, in one side of which is provided a groove or channel 2, preferably dove-tailed in shape, the base of which is'serrated to form a rack 3. The opposite side of handle is also provided with a dove-tailed groove 4, which serves as a guide, in the manner hereinafter described.
. The operating end or head of the wrench embodies afixed jaw 5, the inner face 6 of which is plain, and comprises the fixed jaw of the monkey-wrench. The outer face 7 of fixed jaw 5 is serrated and forms the fixed jaw of the Stilson or pipe-Wrench.
The head of the wrench is provided with two dove-tailed channels, 8 and 9 respectively, the former extending longitudinally of the handle, and the latter at right angles to the handle- The movable jaw 10 of the monkey-wrench, shown in perspective in Fig. 5, is so shaped at its base as to slidably fit into either channel 8 or channel 9, and, accordingly, may be mounted, with reference to the fixed jaw, either in the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, or the position shown in Figs. 2 and 7, thereby enabling the monkey-wrench to operate under a wide range of conditions, with reference to the location ofthe nuts to be manipulated. v
As will'be seen, more particularly from Fig. 5, the bottom of the movable jaw is provided with a rack 11, whereby it may be reciprocated in the manner to be described.
'The head of the wrench is provided with an end with a head, a fixed jaw on thehead, mounting said Worm Wheel for rotation two channels in said head, positioned at while in engagement with the rack, whereby 10 right angles to one another, a movable jaw the movable jaw may be reciprocated in provided with a rack adapted to travel in either one of the specified channels.
either of said channels, aworm Wheel mount- In testimony whereof, I have signed m ed on the head, and adapted to be positioned name to this specification.
in cooperative relation to the rack, and a pin extending through the Worm wheel for WILLIAM DE ROOY. I
