Description

C. F. TOWNSEND.
STOVEPIPE FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED FEB-2,1918- RENEWED APR. 16, 1919.
Patented June 3, 1919.

CHARLES F. TowNsEND, or ONARGA, ILLINOIS.
STOV-EPIPE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 3, 1919,
Application filed. February 2, .1918,-Seria1 No. 215,114. Renewed April 16, 1919; Serial No."290,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs F. TowN- sENn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Onarga, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for fastening stove pipes in a supporting wall and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for looking a stove pipe to a wall. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference Will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the device secured in a flue opening.
Fig. 2 is a rear view ofthe device.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the holding means. Y
In these views 1 represents a split collar having a lug 2 located adjacent each of its ends, said lug being located a slight distance from the end so that said ends will overlap. Each lug is provided with a hole to receive a screw threaded bolt 3. By this means the collar may be adjusted to fit different sizes of plpes but I prefer to so position the lugs that the meeting ends of the collar always overlap so as to provide a complete closure of the collar around the pipe.
The means for locking the collar over the flue opening consists of a pair of inwardly projecting members 4 suitably connected with the rim of the collar as at 5 and each member has its free or inner end provided with a pair of grooves 6 which are formed by cutting the metal forming the members at each edge thereof and then bending the edges inwardly as clearly shown at l inlong arm of the hook engaging and sliding in the grooves 6 of the member 4, and one side of the long arm being formed with a V-shaped rib 10 which extends between and slidably engages the bent over portions or flanges 4: The bolt 8 enters the space below the V-shaped rib and a slot 11 is formed in this rib adjacent the upper end thereof to receive a nut 12 which engages with the bolt. Thus when the bolt is rotated the nut engaging with the walls of the slot will move the sliding member either outwardly or inwardly according to the direction the bolt is turned.
In the operation of the invention the collar is placed in position with the members 4 extending into the flue opening. The screw bolts 8 are then turned with a screw-driver until the hooks engage with the inner walls of the flue thereby locking the collar in position. The stove pipe A is then placed in position with its end passing through the collar and the bolt 3 is then tightened with a screw-driver so that the collar will firmly grip the pipe.
I prefer to form the collar with the edge of the vertical rim bent over as at B to firmly engage with the wall and the outer rim is provided with an outwardly curved part 0 which is adapted to engage with the annular swell D formed on the pipe and the extreme edge of this outer rim is curved outwardly as at E so that the pipe may be readily passed through the collar.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising a collar, inwardly extending members connected therewith, each member having guide Ways formed on its inner end, and a lug ad- V-shaped rib thereon Which extends between jacent to said guide Ways, a sliding member said guide Ways, a nut engaging a part of engaging With the guide ways of each meinsaid rib and a bolt carried by the lug and en- 10 her, said member consisting of a flat hook gaging the nut.
shaped piece the edges of the long arm of a In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. the hook engaging and sliding in the guide Ways, and one side of the long arm having a CHARLES F. TOWNSEND.
