Be it lmownthat I, HAILBERT K.- HITCH- COCK, a citizen vof the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in Door- Holdin Devices,of which the following is a speci cation.
The invention relates to attachments foi` doors, and particularly for doors for uso on motor' vehicles, in which the vibration of the machine frequently causes rattling and squeaking. A door which does notiit tightly is liable-to rattle due to the vibra-l tion, while a tight fit is difficult to secure.y and isv liable to causev squeaking whenthely engaging surfaces move past each vother slightly. The primary object of the present inventlon is to provide a device which will rigidly support the free end of the door v when closed upon relatively large wearing surfaces, with the parts so arranged that the surfaces will be brought into engage- -ment or disengaged'with a minimum amount of friction, thus reducing the wear and effort necessary to move the parts, and insuring that the parts will remain in adjustment during the life of the door. Further objects of the invention `'are to provide a device in which breakage is avoided, which rigidly supports the door against any downward movement whatever, which relieves the' hinges of .the v'vearl incident to the lvibration -of the machine, and which applies yielding force tending to'open the door andkeep this door latch or lock tight.
Certain embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying'drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showl ing the application of one part of the -device to the door jamb, Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the application of the othei` part of the` device to the door, Fig. -3 is a transverse section on the line III-IIIof Fig. 6, Fig. 4 is a face view of part of the device shown in Fig. 1 with the cover plate removed, Fig. 5 is a section on the line V-V of Fig. 4, Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 with the wedge portion of the device shown in section in an operative position, and Fig. 7 is a face view of a modification of one of the parts of the device, the holding screw JIl or the adjusting spring being shown insection.

The screws 5 engage `thedoor jamb and serve to secure the casing in position. o door 6 is provided with a plate`7 secured inposition by means of. the screws 8 and carrying the wedge or spreader 'member 9. The plate 7 and the casing 2 are so positioned relatively that when the door is closed the wedge l9 enters the slot 10 (Fig. 1). The door jamb is provided with the usual overlapping strip 11,while.'the,.door is provided with a corresponding strip 12 (Fig. 3).
Mounted in the casing' 2 are a pairv of toggle plates 13 andll, such platesl having cylindrical Ybearingportions 15 at their ends which engage corresponding recesses in the ends of the casing. The upper plate 13 is provided with a projecting pin 17 and `on this pin is mounted a relativelystifl' spring 18, the upper end of whichis held ina slot 19' in the plate, while the lower portion 2O constitutes ai bearing surface as hereafter set forth. In operation, the closing of the door brings the wedge 9 into the spaceE between ,the opposing bearing members 20 and V21 as indicated in Fig. 6u The spring 16 serves to keep the plates in the proper position to receive the wedge 9,- and by resisting the inward `movement ofthe plates and applying pressure on the 'wedge tends tovopen the door. This application of pressure holds the latch of the door-lock tight and prevents any swinging movement of the door upon its hinges. As a result there is no rattling of the door or the lock such as ordinarily occurs when lost motion is'present after the 'latching of the lock.
