UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
`OSCALB, H. PIEPER AND ALPHONSE F. PIEPER, ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
PRESSURE-REGULATOR.
reference being had to they accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
Our invention hasV to do with pressure regulating devices of the character embody'- ing generally a valve controlling a pressure supply, and mechanism governed by changes of'pressure within a chamber for effecting movement of and determining the position 'of the valve, an instance of the use of Asuch a device beingfound in the art of dental instruments that require a continuous supply of fluid pressure such aswair, Where it is de# sirable to maintain a more or less constant pressure which can be adjustably fixed 'within certain limits. A more particular purpose of the invention is to afford a construction having few parts and which can be manufactured at a minimum cost, while at the same time resulting in a combination that is both strong and eflicient and will respond to the slightest changes that may be required,'and
will continue in operation for an indenite period without likelihood of requiring repair or having its efiiciency in any way impaired. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the endof the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lower part of the casing with the upper part removed.
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the valve member and the cooperating parts in`position.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line ta-4a of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line ia-5a of Fig. 3.
Similar reference characters throughout the several views designate the same part.
According to a preferred form, the invention comprises a chamber 1 formed by up- Specication of Letters Patent. v
with, a source of pressure supply. Arranged in the opening formed in the lower'part of the casing is asleeve 8 threaded at its up# per end to receive a nipple 9 of a connection 10 which extends laterally within the chamber andv affords a downwardly extending pressure inlet 11. Just above the pipe 7, there is preferably disposed an air filtering means which may bein the ,form of a screen 12 having superposed thereon flannel,`or other similar fibrous material indicated as 13, which acts to free the air from any dust particles, or otherimpurities.
The valve member is designated gener'- ally at 14, andcomprises a plate including a widened portion 141aA which is pivotally mounted on bearings 1'5 fixed on the adjacent wall of the casing so as to permit the valve member to swing uponV a horizontal axis. 12a designates a seat of rubber, or other resilient material positioned in aY recess of the reduced portion 14h ofthe valve member, for engagement with the open end which is 'attached tothe casing and has an up'standing portion 15a extending through an opening or cutaway portion 111 of the valve member. A downwardly projecting edge 16 of the spring engages the upper surface of the valve member at one side of its pivotal axis, the spring being attached to the adjacent wall of the casing preferably within said cutaway portion 14C. The valve member is arranged to be engaged by pressure controlled means on the other side of its pivotal axis in order to effect varying movements in accordance with variations in the pressure, and with this in view we employ a diaphragm 17 extending across the chamber 1 and secured between the upper and lower sections 2 and 3 of the casing. The diaphragm 17 carries a pro-v jection 18 arranged to engage the upper surface of the valve member 14 onthe opposite side of its pivotal axis from where it is engaged by the aforementioned spring.-

Thus, as the pressure in the chamber falls, the projection 18 moves downwardly rocking the 'valve member upon its axis and opening the inlet while an increase of pressure elevates the projection 18, closing the inlet correspondingly. The action of the diaphragm 17 may be varied by adjusting the tension of a spring 19 which bears, on its upper side. The upper end of the spring 19 receives a follower 20 with which engages an adjusting screw 21 threaded in the cap 22.
The chamber 1 includes an outlet 23 through which the pressure medium is supplied to any desirable point through a suitable connection, which forms no part of the present invention. 24 designates a stop formed on the lower side of kthe valve member for limiting its downward, or opening movement, while 25 is a spring carried by the valve member and engaging the wall of the casing in a manner that causes the movement of the valve member to be steadied and controlled so as to insure an even regular adjustment.
We claim as our invention:
1. In a pressure regulator, the combination of a casing having inlet and outlet openings, a valve member pivotally supported in said casing and adapted to lcooperate with said inlet open-ing, pressure controlled means for moving said valve member to open said inlet opening, a Afiat spring having 'a downwardly projecting edge engaging said valve member and adapted to move the valve member to close said inlet opening, and a spring on the valve member frictionally e @aging 'a wall of the casing for controllinglithe movements of the valve member.
2. The combination with a casing having a pressure inlet spaced from and directed toward one wall thereof, of a valve member pivotally mounted upon said wallA of the casing and having a seat on its upper surface coperating with the aforementioned inlet, the valve member having a cutaway portion, a leaf spring attached to said wall l'of the casing and extending through the cutaway portion .into engagement with Q the upper surface of the valve member, and pressure controlled means engaging the upper surface ofthe valve member at a point between its pivotal axis and the pressure inlet. Y
3. The combination with a casing having a pressure inlet spaced from and directed toward the wall thereof, :of a plurality-of bearings arranged upon said wall of the casing, a valve member having a widened portion pivotally supported Vat lopposite points of its lower surface upon said bearings and having a reduced portion provided on Yits upper surface with a seat coperating with said inlet, the valve .member havV 65 ingV a cutaway portion, a flat spring at tached to said wallbf the casing having an upwardly eXtendi/ng portion projecting through the cutaway part of the valvermem ber, Vand a downwardly extending portion engaging the upper surface of the valve member at its free end, andpressure con trolled means engaging the upper surface of the valve member at a point between said bearings andthe pressure inlet.
