This invention relates to gas regulators whereby the pressure or head of gas provided at the point of consumption or in the service pipe may be controlled, automatically, and thus be maintained even and consistent at predetermined pressure.
The present invention has for its object to aspects, comprises a further development of certain types of gas regulators such as more particularly disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,058,102," issued to James R. Ricketts, assignor, April 8, 1913fand in an application filed by me April 4, 1913, Serial No. 758,810, which application was allowed July 10, 1913. a
' The present invention has for its objec to provide improvements in gas regulators of the general types and constructions disclosed in and by said mentioned patent application, which will be superior in point of relative simplicity and inexpensiveness of construction and organization combined with positiveness and reliability and efficiency in service, sensitive responsiveness to variations in working conditions, and facility of adjustment and repair and replacement of parts, and capability of long continued operation or use without attention.
With the above and other objects in view, the iriventionconsists in the novel provision, formation, construction, combination, association and relative arrangement of parts, members and features, all as hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and finally pointed out in claims. a
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view, parts being in elevation, of a gas regulator constructed and organized to exemplify one embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse sectional view of the same, taken upon the line m -m Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the appended arrows; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary and partially vertically sectioned view of certain features of the gas feed control means shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and Figs. 4 and 5. are enlarged perspective views of detached features of said gas feed control means.
Qorresponding parts in all the figures are "designated by the same reference characters. Referring with articularity to the drawings, the improve gas regulator comprises in the main a casing A within which is suitably held a transverse diaphragm B, the casing A preferably comprising a circular top member 6 and a circular bottom member 7 having co-engaging edge flanges 8 between which the diaphragm is gripped and held at its edges. A Weight 9 and a bracket 10 are held to the diaphragm respectively above and beneath the same by a screw or the like 11, applied centrally of the diaphragm, and the bracket ranges downwardly within a radial bottom extension 12 of the bottom casing member 7, at the outer open end of which is'provided a detachable closure C. A gas main pipe 13 and a gas service pipe 14 are connected-With suitably threaded nipples 15 and 16 formed or provided upon the extension 12 at the bottom and top thereof just within the open end thereof which is normally sealed by the closure G. i

Such gas feed control means operate with respect to a port 19 formed in a plug 20 screwed into a threaded openin in the casing extension 12 registering witi the nipple 15 of the gas main pipe 13. a
A description will now be given of the gas feed control means and the construction whereby the same are mounted upon the closure 0 and are associated with the diaphragm B.
The closure C comprises a flat plate 21 suitably bolted as at 22 to the outer open end of the casing extension 12, and having inwardly projecting spaced brackets 22- in the oscillating arm 25, and havin its lower end I .through an opening normally closed by a guides 31 and 32 provided upon the brackets the free extremities of which is mounted an adjustable shaft 23 which passes removably through openings in spaced cheeks 24 adjacent to the inner end of an oscillating arm 25 the other end, of which is received adjustably within an enlarged opening 26 in the bracket} upon the diaphragm. The oscillating arm thus ranges longitudinally of the casing extension 12, between the cheeks24 of which a'depending head 27 upon a regulatin arm'28 of adjacent means e receives etachable shaft 23 through a suitable opening, the regulating arm 28 thus being capable of oscillation jointly with and relatively to the oscillating arm 25, upon the shaft 23. The end portion of the regulatin arm 28 nearest to the closure C is blfurcated, as at 29, to freely receive and permit freely to play the upper reduced end 30 of a valve stem 30 mounted to play longitudinally, or vertically of the casing extension 12, in spaced. superposed 22 and directed transversely therefromv between and at right angles thereto. The stem 30 carries at its lower end a valve head33 to which is held a compressible facing 34, by a flanged cap 35 detachably held to the head 33 by a cotter pin 36 passed throu h registering perforations in the head an the cap 35. A cotter pin 37 is passed through the stem 30 above-the forked end 29 of the reg-. ulating arm 28, loosely and operatively holding the stem to the regulating arm. The facing 34 seats upon the lug 20 at the orifice of the gas port 19. Tile other end of the arm 28 is adjustably and operatively connected with the osclllating arm 25 so that the shaft 23 is between the same and the stem 30, by a pin 38 having an enlarged threaded portion 39 threaded into the regulating arm 28 and projecting loosely through an elongated vertical slot 40 in the headed over as at 41' to hol the parts in working relation. The pin 38 is slotted at its upper end, as at 42, to receive an adjusting implement, which may be passed to it screw plug tension 12.
The operation, method of use and advantages of the improvements in as regulators constituting the invention w1ll be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement Gas flows to the chamber within the casing A beneath the diaphragm B through the gas main pipe 13, and the gas port 19, as permitted by the gas feed control means E, and the gas, thus regulated in its flow by the. gas feed control means, cooperating with the diaphragm, passes out from the casing through 43, in the top of the casing exthe service pipe 14. When the parts are in the working positions shown in the draw ings, the shaft 23 is confined and kept in place by the walls of the casing extension 12; and the valve stem 32 with its head 33 and connected parts, and the oscillating arm 25 and regulating arm 28, and connected parts, are all introduced within the casing through the open end of the extension 12, the inner end of the arm 25 freely entering the opening in the bracket 10.v The closure plate 21 is then bolted to the casing. The facing 34 on the valve head is normally slightly spaced from the gas port plug 20, and an increase in gas pressure raises the diaphragm, swinging the arms. 25 and 28, and bringing the valve head face closer to its seat at the orifice of the gas port. Decreasing pressure causes increase of this space, permitting more gas per'time unit to pass through the regulator. The normal spacing of the valve head fromits seat may be varied by adjustment of the regulating arm pivotally upon theshaft 23, by turning the threaded pin 38. 1

The construction and combination of features described permit of positiveness and sensitiveness of operation, and obviate the necessity of frequent repair, adjustment and replacement of parts, which, as will be noted, may be conveniently and expeditiously performed.
I do not desire that my invention be limited in its interpretation to any specfic features of construction and arrangement, by reason of the disclosure in the specification and drawings of an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Having thus disclosed -my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A gas regulator, comprising a casing having a gas inlet port and outlet open ing and a diaphragm within the casing, gas

'2. A gas regulator, comprising a casing having a gas inlet port andoutlet opening and a diaphragm within the casing, gas feed control means within the casing and operatively connected with said diaphragm,
said casing being provided with an opening; and a closuredetachalily applied to said opening and with which said gas feed control means are connected for passage through said last named opening; said closure bein provided with supporting means for sa1d gas feed control means normally projecting within the casing, said supporting means comprising two pairs of spaced brackets, and said as feed control means comprising an osci lating arm detachable from the diaphragm and ivotally connected with one pair of said brackets, and a valve for the gas inlet port actuated by saidoscillating arm and guided in its movement by the other pair ofsaid brackets; and a regulatin arm likewise pivotally connected withsald brackets with which said oscillating arm is pivotally connected and loosely connected with said valve.
3. A gas regulator,'comprising a casing having a gas inlet port and outlet opehing and a diaphragm within the casing, gas feed control means within the casing and operatively connected with said diaphragm,
said casing being provided with an' opening; and a closure detachably applied to said opening and with which said gas feed control means are connected for passage through said last named opening; said closure being provided with supporting means for said gas feed control means normally projecting within the casing, said support-ing means comprising two pairs of spaced brackets, and said gas feed control means comprising "an oscillating arm detachable from the diaphragm and pivotally connected with one pair of said brackets, and a valve for the gas inlet port actuated by said oscillating arm and guided in its movement'by the other pair of said brackets; and a regulating arm likewise pivotally connected with said brackets with which said oscillating arm is pivotally connected and loosely connected with said valve, said regulating arm having a bifurcated end portion receiving a portion of said valve, said valve being provided with detachablemeans holding the valve to said regulating arm.
4. A gas regulator, comprising a casing having a gas inlet port and outlet opening and a diaphragm within the casing, gas feed control means within the casing and operatively connected with said diaphragm, said casing being provided with an opening;.and a closure detachably applied to said opening and with which said gas feed control means are connected for passage through said last named opening; said closure being provided with supporting means for said gas feed control means normally projecting within the casing, said supporting means comprising two pairs of spaced brackets, and said gas feed control means comprisingan oscillating arm detachable from the diaphragm and pivotally connected with one pair of said brackets, and a valve for the gas inlet port actuated by said oscillating arm and guided in its movement by the otherpair of said brackets; and a regulating .arm likewise pivotally connected with said 7 and a closure detachably' applied to said opening and with which said gas feed control means are. connected for passage, through said last named opening; said closure bein provided with supporting,
