GEORGE HENRY WHEARY, 0F RACINE, WISCONSIN.
DRAWER-GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 20, 1919.
Application filed October 31, 1914. Serial No. 869,519. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY WHEARY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in'Drawer- Guides, of which the following is a descrip' tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drawer guides.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a drawer guide more particularly adapted for use in slidably supporting drawers of bureaus, cabinets, etc., with the minimum amount of friction, in order to facilitate the opening and closing thereof and to prevent the drawers from jamming upon the support thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drawer guide which will prevent the tilting of the drawer downwardly when the drawer is withdrawn almost entirely out of its casing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drawer guide which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose desired.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved drawer guide and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a cabinet and drawer provided with the im proved drawer guide;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, a part of the drawer being broken away to'show parts in the rear thereof;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view thereof taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4: is a sectional detail view taken on line 4.4 of Fig. 2.-
Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates a portion of a cabinet or other piece of furniture having a slidable drawer 9 provided with the improved guide 10.
The portion of the cabinet shown is of a type in which drawers mounted one above another may be pulled outwardly to positions of convenient accessibility while supported on the drawer guides.
It is to be understood however that the guides may be of the same length as the depth of'the drawers as in ordinary bureaus without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
'In order to accommodate the guides the slde portions 11 of the drawer are grooved or recessed as indicated by the numeral 12 to receive the channeled-portions 13 of the channel guide plates 14 mounted thereon. The said guide plates are of U-shape in cross section and have comparatively wide flange portions 15 for attaching the plates to the drawer sides by nails 16 Or other desirable means. As the metal of the guide plates is comparatively thin the plates will be substantially flush with the outer sides of the drawers.
Guide members 17 formed preferably of round metal rods having apertured flattened end and medial portions 18 and 18 are mounted on the inner sides of the side Walls 19 of the cabinet and the channeled guide plates 14 are slidably mounted thereon. The flattened end and medial portions of the guide members offset the supporting portions 20 from the side walls of the cabinet a sufficient distance so that the said portions 20 extend into the channels of the guide plates and form a firm support for the drawer.
The medial flattened and offset portions of the guide members serve to reinforce the medial portions of the guide members and in long guide members more than one flattened portion may be provided.
As the guide members fit fairly close within the channeled portions of the guide plates the ordinary drawers may be pulled outwardly a considerable distance so that only a small portion of the supporting members will be engaged by the drawer plates without permitting the drawers to tilt downwardly or bind. The metal contact between the two portions of each drawer guide also serves to eliminate friction to a large extent so that the drawer may be easily moved on extending into the channeled portion of said channeled member and having apertured flattened offset portions which space the guide portion of the rod away from the support to which it is attached.
2. A drawer guide, comprising an elongated strip of material of U-shape in cross section and having flange portions projecting laterally therefrom, and a guide rod member having an elongated portion round in cross'section which enters the U-shaped portion of the strip of material and is provided with oflset flattened apertured portions for attaching the guide rod member to a support and oflsetting the guide portions from the support.
3. In combination with a casing having a slidable drawer provided with horizontally extending elongated recesses in its side por- Copies of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
tions, of guide members therefor, comprising elongated strips of material of U-shape in cross section and having flange portions projecting laterally therefrom, the U-shaped portions. of said guide members extending into the drawer recesses and the flange portions of said members being secured to the side portions of the drawer, and guide rod members having offset flattened apertured portions attached to the casing and elongated rounded supported portions which are offset from the casing and extend into the elongated recesses of the guide members.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
