Description
Unire JACOB F. ARNOLD, OF BELLEVUE, OHIO.
BooKcAsE. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedJ une 1, 1920.
Application `led March 14, 1919. Serial No. 282,658.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB F; ARNOLD, av
citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bookcase, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to book cases of the type generally known as sectional book cases and usually having swinging doors which are pivotally mounted at their upper ends and adapted to slide edgewise into inoperative position within the book case; and the object of the invention is to provide a book case open in one side and having a vertically swinging and horizontally sliding door for the front and means for mounting the door for swinging and sliding movement upon the book case.
rIhe object of the invention thus generally stated is attained by providing a pair of L-shaped guide rods in the upper portion of the book case parallel to and spaced from the side walls, each rod having its forward angular portion connected to the adjacent side wall and by providing swinging doors having a sliding and pivotal mounting upon said rods whereby they are adapted to be slid edgewise into operative position within the book case.
The invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which- Figure l is a transverse sectional view through a book case section showing the door in the closed position;
Fig. 2, a transverse sectional view through the book case section showing the door in the opened position;
Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of a portion of the door showing one side wall and a portion of the rear wall in section, the door being shown in the opened position;
Fig. 4, a fragmentary perspective view showing the pivotal mounting of the door, the door being shown in the closed position; and
Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 4, showing the door inthe opened position.
A practicall embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The book case which may be of any well known or preferred construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as one i section of the usual sectional book case and includes the bottom 1, side and rear walls 2 and 3 respectively and the top 4, the front of the section being closed by the usual swinging and sliding door 5. An L-shaped guide rod 6, preferably round in cross section is mountedin the upper portion of the rcompartment spacedfrom and parallel to each side wall, each guide rod being connected at its rear extremity to the rear wall and having its forward angular portion 7 connected to the adjacent side wall at a point near the forward edge of the side wall as shown.
The slidable pivotal mounting for the door comprises a pair of members 8, one of which is mounted at each upper corner of the door on the inner side thereof. Each of these members is preferably stamped from sheet metal and includes the hook portion 9 adapted to rest upon the out-turned portion 7 of the guide rod when the door is in the closed position thus detachably mounting, the door in swinging relation to the book case. Each member 8 is also provided with an in-turned curved flange 10 extending from a l point above the hook portion to the upper extremity of the member 8, this flange and the iii-turned flange 1l which is parallel to and spaced therefrom forming a channel adapted to slide upon the guide rods 6 when the door is raised to a horizontal position and slid edgewise into the compartment.
From the foregoing the operation of my device will be readily understood. When the door is closed it will be supported by the hooks 9 resting upon the out-turned portions 7 of the guide rods and to open the door the lower end is moved outward and upward to a horizontal position, bringing the channel portions of the members 8 into engagement with the guide rods 6 when the door can be slid into the case, the channel portions of the members 8 sliding upon the guide rods and maintaining the rear of the door against sidewise movement. It should be noted that as the door is swung into a horizontal position bringing the channell portions of the members 8 into engagement with the guide rods the hooks 9 will be released from the out-turned portions 7 of the guide rods allowing the door to be slid back into the compartment and as the door is drawn out the hooks 9 will again engage the out-turned Vportions 7 of the guide rods supporting the door pivotally with relation to the book case, allowing it to be swung down into the closed position.
The device is herein shown embodied in book case sections, but it is obvious that it is adapted for use in any article of furniture consisting of a compartment arranged to be closed by means of a swinging door.
I claim: Y
l. A book compartmentor case, a horizontal rod upon eachside of the compartment, a horizontal. angular portion upon each rod, a door, and attaching members upon the door for engagement withthe rods, each attaching member comprising a channel portionfor sliding engagement with the adjacent rod and a hook spaced from and at one side of; the end of the channel portion and arranged for swinging engagement with the angular portion of the rod when the channel portion is released from the rod.
2. A case open on one side, an L-sliaped rod ,within said case, a horizontally-sliding and vertically-swinging door and an infieXible attaching member carried by said door comprising a channel portion for sliding engagement with said rod and off-set hook portion for swinging engagement with the angular portion of the rod.
3. A book compartment or case, an L- shaped horizontal rod upon each side of the compartment, a door, and attaching members on the door for engagement with the rods, each comprising a channel portion and a hook Voff-set upon one extremity of the channel portion.
. 4. A book compartment or case, an L- shaped horizontal rod upon each side of the compartment, a door and attaching members-0n the door for engagement with the rods, each comprising a channel portion ter-v minating at substantially the longitudinal center of said meinber-7 ahook spaced `from and at one side of the extremity of said channel portion and a longitudinal flange spaced from said hook and forming a continuation of one side of saidv channel portion. In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed mly name.
JACOB F. ARNOLD.
