This invention-relates generally to drawers for desks, cabinets and other articles of furniture,
and more particularly to means for extensibly mounting such drawers.
one object of the invention is to provide a mounting structurally characterized by a minimum number of inexpensively constructed parts which are functionally related in a manner to 'oo-act'in mountinga drawer for movement while enabling the drawer to be withdrawn to a fully opened position in which the drawer will be rigidly supported. and yet can be actuated with ease, all Without the use of expensive anti-friction and complex guiding devices.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drawer mounting the parts of which can be readily stamped form sheet metal and can be assembled and correlated with an article of furniture and with a drawer thereof with ease and dispatch to function as an extremely durable and positively acting extensible support for the drawer.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as set forth in the follow:- ing specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4, but taken on the line 55 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on the line fi-6 of Figure 1;

In its application to an article of furniture for the extensible mounting of a drawer therein, the invention comprises two units U and U which are identical in construction with the exception of being right and left hand, respectively, as they are associated with opposite sides of a drawer.
A detailed description of one of the two units illustrated in Figure 3 will, therefore, suffice. Each unit comprises a stationary supporting member M in the form of a sheet metal plate of generally rectangular outline, the body portion iii of which is provided with openings I l-l I through which fastening members, such as headed screws l2, are passed and are screwed into a vertical wall l3 of a drawer receiving opening M in an article of furniture so that the length of the plate will be disposed horizontally and adjacent the front of the opening i l. From one longitudinal edge of the body portion ll! which in the applied position of the member is its bottom edge, projects laterally inward, a base flange 55.
From the other longitudinal or top edge of the body portion l0 projects laterally and horizontally inward a-flange It terminating in a vertical- 1y disposed rail ll which projects upwardly from the inner or free edge of the flange, all as clearly shown in Figure 6. Adjacent the rear end of the body portion It], a lug i8 is instruck laterally so as to be vertically disposed, and is covered by a sleeve or band of elastic rubber [9 to provide a cushioned stop 2!].
A slide member S is associated with the supporting member M and is in the form of a sheet metal plate of generally rectangular outline of a height approximating that of the member M and of a length somewhat in excess of two lengths of the member M. One longitudinal edge of the body portion M of the member S which constitutes its i top edge in the operating position of the member, is provided with a return bend forming a portion of U-shaped cross section which'provides a runner 22 receiving the rail ll so as to ride or slide on the latter. Instruck laterally fromthe body portion 2| of the slide member so as to extend longitudinally of the member adjacent its top edge is a retaining flange 23 which underlies the flange 16 of the supporting member so as to co-act with the latter and with therunner-22 in confining the slide member against displacement vertically from the supporting member.
The lower part of the body portion 2| is laterally bent angularly throughout its length as indicated at M and then in parallelism at 25 which latter portion is adapted to ride against the inner face of the body portion it of the supporting member M and upon the base flange 15 of the latter. Adjacent its rear end the body portion 2 l' of the slide member is outstruck laterally to form a lug 26 vertically disposed and covered by a sleeve or band 21 of elastic rubber to provide a cushioned stop 28 which co-acts with the stop 28 of the supporting member M in definitely limiting the forward movement of the slide member S at the projected position relative to the drawer receiving opening 13, as shown in Figures 2 and. 5.
In conjunction with the supporting and slide members M and S, respectively, brackets B and B' are provided, these brackets being identical in construction and each being in the form of a metallic plate which is secured by screws 29 to a vertical side wall 39 of a drawer D, one of the brackets being disposed at the rear end of the drawer and the other being spaced a considerable distance forwardly therefrom. Each bracket is laterally and then downwardly bent to provide a horizontal flange 3i and a vertically depending flange 32 which co-act with the confronting vertical face of the drawer wall 38 in providing an upwardly opening guideway which receives the runner 22 so as to mount the drawer on the slide member S for sliding movement relative thereto from the closed position of the drawer shown in Figures 1 and 3 to the fully opened position of the drawer shown in Figures 2 and 5, and wherein the slide member S is fully projected and the forward bracket B co-acts with a laterally projecting lug 33 on the forward end of the runner 22 of the slide member.
The operation of the invention is as follows:
Prior to the installation of the two units U and U, the lug 33 of the slide member S of each unit occupies a position in alinement with the vertical flange of the runner 22, of which flange the lug originally forms the forward end, as shown in Figure 8. Following the mounting of the drawer D on the slide members of the units by means of the brackets B and B of the respective units, and with the slide member of each unit projecting from the drawer receiving opening i i the lug 33 is accessible for bending to the right angular and active position shown in Figures 1, 2, 4 and 5.
In now actuating the drawer to move same from the closed position shown in Figures 1 and 4 to the fully opened position shown in Figures 2 and 5, the forward brackets B of the respective units U and U will engage the lugs 33 of the respective slide members S to advance the latter from the retracted position shown in Figures 1 and 4 to the projected position shown in Figures 2 and 5. It will be clear that the runners 22 of the slide members will ride upon the rails ll of the respective supporting members M so as to accurately guide the slide members in rectilinear paths and that the slide members are confined against tilting in a vertical plane by the co-action of the runners '22 and the retaining flanges 23 with the rails El and the flanges l6, respectively, of the supporting members.
The lugs 33 co-act with the brackets B to definitely determine the extended position of the drawer relative to the slide members, or to express this functioning in another manner, the lugs and brackets co-act to definitely limit the opening movement of the drawer relative to the slide members.
The stops 20 and 28 of the supporting and slide members, respectively, co-act in definitely determining the projected position of the slide members relative to the supporting members, or in other words definitely limit the advancing movement of the slide members relative to the supporting members, all with the result that the drawer in its fully open position will be rigidly supported from the slide members by the pairs of brackets B and B which function as hangers.
Should there be any tendency of the drawer to tilt downwardly at its forward end about the forward brackets B as fulcrums due to overloading of the forward portion of the drawer, the rear end of the drawer which in the extended position of the drawer is disposed within the opening [4, engages the top wall of the opening at the front of the article of furniture so as to positively prevent such tilting movement.
It will be apparent that during the closing movement of the drawer, the slide members will be caused to retract relative to the drawer by the laterally overhanging side edges of the drawer front so as to finally occupy the fully retracted position shown in Figures 1 and 4, when the drawer is closed.
