HARRY L. VON TROTT, OF FORT MADISON, IOWA.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20,1919.
, Application filed January 25, 1918. Serial No. 213,635.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. VON TROTT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Extension-Tables, of which the following-is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to extension tables and has for its chief object the provision of an extension table which is characterized by cheapness of manufacture, simplicity of construction and general efficiency. Broadly, my invention contemplates a table having a plurality of legs supporting a fixed and stationary top under which are disposed a number of slidable leaf supports arranged to receive removable leaves to enlarge the table and to hold them securely. Convenient means is provided also to store the leaves when they are not in use. The arrangement of parts by which I attain the above objects will be understood fully by reference to the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of one end of, the table having part of one of the face boards'broken away to reveal the interior-construction;
Fig. 2 is a View somewhat similar to Fig. 1, showing the leaf supports extended and the leaves in place;
. Fig. 3 is a sectional line 33 of Fig. 1; I
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top View of a portion of the table, showing the leaf supports in closed position, the top of the table being illustrated in dotted lines; and
Fig. 5 is a view somewhat similar to Fig. 4 but showing the leaf supports in their extended position.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The legs 10, are arranged to support a fixed table top 11, which for the sake of cheapness in the manufacture of kitchen tables is made of two parts. The four sides of the table illustrated are provided with face boards 13 and 14 on opposite sides and face boards 15 and 16 on opposite sides. Extending across each other at the central portion under the table top are a pair of central supports 17 and 18, the support 18 being secured to the cross pieces 19 and 20 view taken along the adjacent the face boards 13 and 14, the cross pieces 19 and 20 being secured to the legs 10, 10. Two sides of the table are provided with a pair of horizontally slidable leaf supports 22, 22and 23, 23. Openings 24, 24 are provided in the face board 16 for the reception of the leaf supports 22, 22 and similar openings 25, 25 are provided in the face board 15 for the reception of'the leaf supports 23, 23. The openings 24 and 25 in the face boards are of the same width as the leaf supports, but in the central support 18 openings are provided which are ofthe width of the two supports in order to re ceive the same. The openings in the central support are disposed immediately adjacent the cross pieces 19; and 20 and in alinement with their associated openings in the face boards. Lateral movement of the leaf supports is prevented by the cross pieces 19 and 20 and'the central support 18. To pre' vent accidental removal of the leaf supports downwardly extending pins 29 are provided on the under side of the leaf supports, and so arranged that they will abut the inner side of the face board when the leaf supports are withdrawn sufficiently. When the leaf supports are in their closed position.
the inner end will abut the inner side of the face boards, as most clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. The leaves 32 and 33 areeach provided with means so that they may be held securely to the leaf supports. As shown in Fig. 2 the fixed table top 11 has its edges rounded at 35 and the leaf has a correspondingly shaped edge to fit around the rounded portion 35. A, pin 36 extendsup wardly from the leaf support into a socket in the leaf to prevent horizontal movement of the leaf away from the table. Grooves 37 are provided in the under side of the table top 11 for the reception of the pins 36 when the leaf supports are in closed position. A spring snap member is provided on the under side of the leaf, which consists of a spring pressed U member 38, to c06perate with a finger piece 39 carried at the outer end of the leaf supports. This lock is very similar to those ordinarily used on trunks and the'like. The finger piece 39 also serves as a handle by means of which the leaf supports may be withdrawn readily. I have found that this is a very convenient means of securing the leaf to its support by a single movement. Both of the face members 13 and 14, as well as the cross pieces 19 and 20, and the central support 17 have openings provided therein for the reception of the detachable leaves when they are not in use. The members 17,119 and 20 are substantially U-shaped and have their downwardly extending arms connected by a.
metallic strip 40 attached by means of screws, which provides a convenient means of storing the leaves when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is! 1. An extension table comprising in combination a plurality'of supporting legs, a fixed table top therefor, a face board disposedbetween said legs, a cross piece secured to said legs, a pair of central supports extending under the top, a detachable leaf, a slidable leaf support disposed in openings in one of the central support-s and the face board, said leaf support arranged to abut the inner side of the face board when in closedposition, meansto prevent the removal of said leaf support, means carried by the outer end of the leaf support and the leaf. arranged to cooperate to prevent movement of the leaf, and means contained within the cross piece and a central support ar ranged to carry the leaf when not in use.
2. An extension table comprising in combination a plurality of supporting legs, a fixed table top therefor, a face board disposed between said legs, a pair of central supports extending under the top, a detachable leaf, a slida'ble leaf support disposed in openings in one of the central supports and the, face board, said leaf support arranged to abut the inner side of the face board when in closed position, m.eans to prevent the removal of said leaf support, means carried by the outer end of the leaf support and the leaf arranged to cooperate to prevent the movement of the leaf, and means contained within a central support arranged to carry the leaf when not in use.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five-cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
3. An extension table comprising in combination a plurality of supporting legs, a fixed table top therefor, a face board disposed between said legs, a pair of central supports extending under the top, a. detach- 4. An extension table comprising in c'om bination a plurality of supporting legs, a tabletop therefor, a face board disposed between said legs, a cross piece adjacent to said legs, a pair of central supports disposed beneath the table top, a detachable leaf, a leaf support arranged for horizontal movement and. adapted when extended to receive the detachable leaf, a finger piece carried at one end of the leaf support, a spring pressed member carried by the leaf arranged to cooperate with the finger piece to hold the leaf against movement.
5. A11 extension table comprising. incombination a plurality of legs, a table top therefor, a plurality of face boards secured to said legs, a pair of central supports, a detachable leaf'adapted for disposition adj acent the table top, a pair of leaf supports movable horizontally to support saidleaf adjacent anou-ter edge of said top, and sup porting means carried by one ofthe central supports to carry the detachable'lea'f when not in use. 7 g V In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this HARRY L. VON TROTT. Witnesses:
