Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. e, 1921.
Application filed April 15, 1921. Serial No. 461,733.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLIAM F. BRENNAN,
'a citizen of the United States, residing at Collinsville, Madison county, Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Efiiciency-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to efiiciency tables;
An object of the invention is to provide an extension table with a removable top leaf at the end and a receptacle in the space below the removable top leaf, adapted to be used for different purposes, and a guard adapted to be applied to the side edge of the table top above the receptacle;
Another object of the invention is to provide an extension table with removable top leaves and novel means for retaining'same in position on the table. 1n the drawings, in which I have shown a proper embodiment of the table,
Figure 1 is a view showing the removable top leavesand improved means for holding them on the table, and areceptacle below the removable top leaves. 7
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the table with the removable or extension leaves removed, showing the receptacle at onev end of the table andthe guard in position at the side edge of the table.
Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the table of the form shown in Fig. 2.
As shown, my improved table is of the extension type,.comprising a frame 1 at one end of the table and a frame 2 at the opposite end of the table, held in proper relative positions, which permits sliding adjustment thereof to extend or shorten the table, by the usual extension slides 3. These frame in the extension slides are arranged in the usual well known manner, and the specific construction and arrangement thereof to permit sliding adjustment constitute no part of the present invention and for that reason are not specifically shown or described. For present purposes it is sufficient to understand that these parts are capable of sliding movement to extend or to shorten the table. It is in connection with this usual construction that my present invention is used.
The frame 1 is supported by the usual legs 1 and the frame 2 is supported by the usual legs 5, while the central frame 3 is supported by a central leg 6 as is well understood by those familiar with extension tables. All of the table legs may be provided with caster rollers 7.
Upon the frame 1 a top leaf 8 is permanently secured. A top leaf 9 is provided for the frame 2. The width of the leaf 9 is equal to the length of the frame 2 so that when the table is shortened to abut the end of the frame 2 against the end of the frame 1, the inner side edge of the removable leaf 9 contacts against the inner side edge of the fixed leaf 8. The inner side edge of the leaf 9 is provided with dowel pins 10 which are received in holes in the side edge of the fixed leaf 8 when the table is shortened. The leaf 9 is'provided with recesses arranged to receive arms or lugsll, extending upwardly from the frame 2 which hold the leaf 9 in proper alinement with the remaining parts of the table. I also provide removable keys 12 arranged to be inserted in holes formed in the top leaf 9 and to pass through holes in the arms or lugs 11 to fasten the leaf 9 in connection with the table. Preferably the outer ends of the keys 12 are provided with manually engageable parts 13 whereby said keysmay be easily inserted and withdrawn. 7
If desired, the table maybe extended only to the length shown in Fig. 2 in which the adjacent side'edges of the table leaves 8 and 9 willcontact. Tnsuch position the dowel pins 10 on' the removable leaf 9 en gage in holes in the fixed leaf 8 as stated. The table may be extended andmade continuous by a number of removable leaves 14 placed between the leaves 8 and 9, in
which case the leaf 14 that contacts with the fixed leaf 8 is provided with dowel pins 15 for interlocking with said fixed leaf, and the leaf 14 that contacts with the remov able leaf 9 has holes to receive the dowel pins 10. The adjacent edges of the removable leaves 141 are provided with inter-locking connection 16.
The receptacle which is included in the invention and which is capable of movement between the legs 5 of the table to a position under the removable leaf 9 may be in the form shown. As shown, the receptacle is in the form of a crib 17 supported on caster rollers 18, and is of a width approximately equal to the width of the removable leaf 9, so that the dimensions of the receptacle may be varied. When it is desired to use the fixed leaf 8 for any purpose and at the same time to use the receptacle 17 the removableleaves 9 and 14 may be removed from the table and the length of the table may be reduced, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in Whichthe receptacle 17 is conveniently located at the frame, so that the guard will be securely held in position,
A table embodying the improvements C16. scribed is a genuine household convenience. The crib or receptacle 17, arranged for use in association with the tab1e, may be applied to various uses, Whether as a crib for an infant or as a receptacle for articles being placed on or removed from the table, or other uses. The guard 19 will prevent articles from being pushed off the table into the receptacle 17, and will also-serve as a guard to prevent achild in a crib from pulling articles from the table when the receptacle is used as an infants crib.
It is apparent that allof the intended purposes are obtained in a highly satisfactory manner. The specificconstruction and arrangement of the parts may be varied within equivalent limits without departure from the invention. I
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An extension table for household use, comprising a supporting frame, a top leaf rigid on the supporting frame, an additional frame connected with the supporting frame and movable toward and away from the supporting frame, a top leaf removably toward and away from the supporting frame, a removable top leaffor said additional frame, removable leaves removably supported between said two top leaves, a guard, and means for removably supporting said guard vertically at the side edge of said rigid top leaf when said additional frame is adjacent to said supporting frame and when all of said top leaves other than the rigid top leaf are removed.
3. An extension table for household use, comprisinga supporting frame, a top-leaf rigid on the supporting frame, an additional frame connected with and movable toward and away from the supporting frame, a removable top leaf for said addi tional frame, removable leaves removably supported between said two top leaves, a guard, means for removably supporting said guard vertically at the side edge of said rigid top leaf when said additional frame is adjacent to said supporting frame and when all of said top leaves other than i the rigid top leaves are removed, and areceptacle within the limits of said additional frame. 7 o j WILLIAM BRENNAN;
