COMBINED BLANK FOB. LETTER 0B MESSAGE WRITING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
Application filed September 9, 1918. Serial No. 258,271.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, AMERICUS F. CALLA- HAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conrbined Blanks for Letter or'Message Writing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingis, forming part of this specification.
he present invention relates to improvements in blanks which are designed to facilitate letter or message writing and particularly letters or messages which are written on a typewriter with the use of transfer material for duplicating the address to be exposed on the exterior of the sealed message and which, owing to the fact that it is produced by transfer, insures the correctness of the external address. In the development of the art, more especially as relates to a means for preventing discrepancies between the address on the letter heading and the external address, it has been proposed to form the address for the external face of a combined letter sheet by transfer material, the duplicate of the address being either on the external sheet or section or on the original message sheet or section, but the efforts to produce a combined blank have not met with practical success. Established business methods require that original messages shall be free from attachments or complications, ready for filin and prmervation, and that the sender s all be able, if desired to preserve an exact duplicate of the entire writing, including, for example, the identification data of a telegraphic message, the address, and the message itself, while the inclosing section must omit all identification data and serve as a complete cover or closure for such data, as well as the body of the message written on the original sheet.
The present invention is designed to provide a combined blank for letter or message writing which will embod the desirable characteristics last above re erred to and be of a form which will adapt it for convenient and ready use by an amanuensis without liability of disarrangement in manipulation, as for example by being inserted in the typewriter which at the same time shall be cheap and capable of being handled rapidly in accordance with modern business methods, the product presenting for use an original message containing all of the identification data, the address and the message with an attached external inclosing sheet or sec tion containing the business heading and the address only and if desired the second sheet containing a duplicate of all matter written on the original, said writing being entirely produced or duplicated at the time the orig1 nal is written. 7 Referring to the accompanying draw- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined blank for letter or message writing, embodying the present invention, the several layers or sheets being somewhat separated one from the other, to illustrate the formation of the structure in a way readily understood from the drawing alone.
Fig. 2 is an ed e view showing the several parts of the blani; and
Fig. 3 is a rear face view showing the preferred arrangement of the narrow strip of transfer material for duplicating the a dress, the external sheet or section bein turned out into the plane of the origina sheet.
The combined blank embodies a sheet or section for the original writing, indicated at A. This sheet or section is provided with the usual business heading at 1, a panel or space for identification data as at 2, a narrow panel as at 3 for the name and address of the addressee and a third panel as at 4 for the written body of the message.
To the lower edge of the original sheet or section A there is detachably secured a second sheet B which is of substantially the same size as the sheet A, the detachable connection being formed referably by a line of perforations or wea ness as at 5. This second sheet B is, during the writing of the message, folded back of the sheet or section A, and its free edge 6 is in turn adapted to be confined b a rearwardly folding external sheet or section 0. The sheet or section 0 is relatively short or in efl'ect of an area substantially coextensive with the panels 1, 2 and 3 and on the face op osite the-face having the heading 1 it pre erably has a duplicate business heading as at 7, and a lower ganel as at 8 which corresponds to the adress panel 3. When folded to the position in Fig. 2, the two address panels 3 and 8 register one behind the other, and in order to duplicate the address alone on the external sheet or section C, the second sheet or section is provided with a narrow strip of transfer material D which may be coex tensive in area. with the address panel, but does not extend sufficiently far to ermit of duplication by transfer of either t e identification data at 2 or the body of the message at 4. Where a duplicate copy of the entire message is desired, a removable sheet of transfer material F is located between the original and second sheets or sections, between which it will be confined by the folding rearwardly of the sections B and C in such wise that accidental displacement is unlikely and the whole combined blank may, therefore, be readily inserted around the platen of a typewriter for the production of the original writing including the identification data, the name and address and the message itself.
\Vhen the message has been written it is a simple matter to detach the second sheet and remove the same together with the transfer sheet, should the latter be used, whereupon the original sheet or section A may be folded from the bottom upwardly in a forward direction, and the external sheet turned over or folded forwardly and downwardly over the same so as to constitute a complete inclosure for the writing.
I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate herein any particular sealing means, as such sealin means are well understood in the art and may consist of pastors to close the ends of the folded sheet with the message thereon, or the external sheet or section may be provided with gummed tabs for accomplishing the same ends. Both constructions are well understood in the art and need not be illustrated or further de scribed herein, inasmuch as they constitute no part of the present invention.
The second sheet, if no duplicate message has been produced thereon, may be preserved for other uses, or' if a duplicate of the original writing has been produced thereon it may be filed away for the record of the writer or the telegraph company in case of a telegraphic message.
1 The addressee receives a communication which is free from transfer material such as would tend to besmirch his file record,
and the senders records are left complete in every particular.
possibility of a discrepancy, and all labor of writing two addresses is done away with.
What is claimed is:

when folded forwardly being adaptedto inclose the original sheet and to form the addressed inclosure for the message.
3.
