CHECK-LINE COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
Application filed July 6, 1918. Serial No. 243,619.
To (4Z5 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PINCKNEY F. SoivrERs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Stony Point, in the county of Alexander and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check-Line Couplings, of which the following is a speciiication.
h This invention relates to check line couplers for harness and it has for its object to produce a device of this class which will be simple in construction and by the use of which the twisting of the check lines by careless drivers will be avoided.
A further object of the invention is to produce a check line coupler of simple and efiicient construction in the construction of which swivels are included with which the check lines and driving reins may be connected.
A further object of the invention is to produce a check line coupler of simple and improved construction having the characteristics to be set forth.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of theclaim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved coupler showing the check lines and one of the driving reins connected therewith.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the coupler.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The frame A of the improved device may be cast or otherwise formed from metal in a neat and ornamental shape. As shown in the drawing one end bar 15 of said frame is straight, the opposite end bar 16 being curved, and the side bars 17 being also curved inwardly with respect to the frame. The curved end bar 16 is provided on opposite side faces thereof with bosses 18, said bosses being longitudinally apertured to receive a shank 19 having at its outer end a loop or terret 20, the inner end of the shank being provided with a collar 21 abutting on the inwardly extending boss 18 to retain the shank in position, it being obvious that the shank is free to rotate about its axis, thus constituting a swivel. The cross piece or end piece 15 of the frame is provided near the ends and on both sides or faces thereof with bosses 22, similar to the bosses 18, and each pair of bosses 22 being likewise apertured for the reception of a swivel shank 23 carrying at one end a loop or terret 24 and at the other end a collar 25.
The check lines 26 are connected with the loops or terrets 24, and the driving rein 27 is connected with the loop or terret 20. By this construction and arrangement a swivel connection is established between the check lines and the driving rein, and the parts are not liable to become permanently twisted or otherwise disarranged.
What is claimed is p A check line coupler consisting of a frame, the end pieces of which are provided with alined bosses on opposite sides thereof, one end piece having two pairs of bosses about equidistant from the ends thereof, and the other end piece having a single pair of alined bosses about midway between the ends thereof, said bosses being longitudinally apertured, in combination with shanks extending through the respective bosses and swiveled therein, said shanks having terrets at their outer ends for connection, respectively, with a pair of check lines and a driving rein.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
PINGKNEY F. SOMERS.
