PoRTER A. STRANGE, 0E DALLAS, TEXAS, AssIGNoR 0E ONE-FOURTH To MARTHA E.` WILSON, 0E DALLAS, TEXAS.- v
REERIGERATING. APPARATUS.
To all whomz't may concern: p
Be it known that I, `PORTER A. STRANGE, citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and usevful Improvements in Refrigerating Apparatus, of which the following `is a specification. Y
This invention pertains to vrefrigerating apparatuses and particularly to evaporators.
Devices of this class are designed` to keep food cool without the use of ice, depending upon aprons or cloths kept moistened with water and exposed to air currents, whereby theinterior of the receptacle isY cooled by 4the evaporation asis well understood.
The features of my invention reside in the provision of removable evaporating or cooling panels for the purpose of cleansing,
re lacin or re airiiw which makes for sanitation; the provision of means for assuring a saturation of the cooling` panels and an even distribution of water thereover;` the provision of novel means for delivering water to the door-panel and for conducting the water therefrom; and the provision of certain advantageous and oonvenient elements adding to the usefulness and eiciency of an apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention.
In carrying out the invention I provide a receptacle of the usual shape with removable cooling panels disposed vertically in three of its sides as well as in its door. The
top which carries the water tank is remov-l able thus giving access to the panels, but access could be had otherwise. Spreaders are provided at thetop of each panel and guide the water to the panel and spread it` Specification of Letters Patent.
, `14 surroundinglthe housing.A The top p `ltionalso has a marginal bead 15. A tank or Fig. A is a detail of one of the evaporating panels,` 'p y Fig. 5` is a sectional view showing the spreader construction, and
' Fig. 6 is a sectional detail of the waterdrain for the door.
In the drawings the numeral l designates an outer shell or housing and 2 an inner shell or lining spaced therefrom. The housing has abottoln 3 with a drain outlet A `and the lining terminates short of this bottom. The housing is supported byfour legs 5 secured to the corners. Each end and the back of the housing has a rectangular opening "6 of substantial'size and covered with hardware cloth or equivalent material 7 These openings do not extend through the lining. Each opening has at each side an upright member 8` bent at right angles to the housing and secured t o the lining where-- by the latter is supported.
y Each member 8 has a vertical groove or slide-way 9 in juxtaposition to the outer face` of the lining. Evaporating or cooling panels lOare inserted in the grooves from the'top and slid down to the bottom 3 on which they rest. Each panel is formed of a rectangular frame 12 covered with a suit- Patented May 6, v1919. 1 y Application inea November 9,1917. sriai No.`2o1,ooe.
able fabric. The panels are exposed by the I openings 6, but are protected by the covering 7.
tion 13 is mounted on the housing and is provided with a depending iiange or apron ,S9/C* reservoir 16 is provided on the said section and has a cover 17 which may be removed for filling. A plurality of small faucets 18 projectfrom the lower portion of the tank and each registers with an opening 19 in the marginal portion of the top section.
The tank is lled with water and the faucets are regulated so that the water drips therefrom as the conditions may require. As
will be seen the top section being removable some play must be allowed and thus it would be diicult to place the panels so that the water would always drop upon the same at the most desirable point. To overcome this spreader plates 20 are mounted in the iiange i The upper edges of the housing and lin-` 14 andv Supported. olidoW.1..1Wti1-ftlly- Y in?.
cunea'iips '21 earffdm the upper @has ofn the housing toward the panels. Theseplates havehandles 22 extendingithrough the flange so that they may be pressedfagainst thev fabric of the panels or pulled away when the top section is to be removed. The plates are disposed under the openings 19 and guide. the Water tothe panels.
A slight modification is employed in the door Which however has an' opening 23 covered with. hardware eloth 2.41 and; a. lining sheet 25. At'each side of the openingup; right members 26 are eiovidedwith grooves Vl5 2'T`like` the members 8 receive a panel therefiomfoiito delieetjoi fiihileli dirette 30 it into. the bottom of. the apparatus.
A, eISebOt-tOn-i 3,4 is Supported bythe linf ing eboi'e the lower end thereof. and under the false bottom e' Water reeepteble iS formed'- It will ble seen. that the panels 1.0 will not only reeeive Water from the faucets 11,8 but they rest on the bottoin 3. Will be .kept Saturated by 'eepillary attraction, The cooling actionof the appara-tus is too Well understood. tensed fuitlier, explanation- It will be Seed that eiijeveii distribution ofthe Water to the panels. 10 ie had and.' all. the panels vmay be Areinoved yWhen desired for cleaning or other. purposes. .The Whole'apparatusmakes forsanitation as the topsec-v tion maybe removed cleaned the interioi"cleaned"and sunnedfl if desired. Thev foregoing description and illustration clearly express. the invention, but it is to be understood that said illustration is merely anr exempliiication and the invention may be carried out" in various other Ways.
What I claim, is:
1. In a refrigerating apparatus, the combination with an outer housing having air admitting openings, and a lining Within the housing spaced therefrom, of` a removable top mounted on the housing end Gerryng water tank, evaporating'penele in the space between. the housing and the lining and adjustable defieeting devices. for guidiiigtlie Welter .from the 'tank to the panels and. spreading. tlie Same over said panels.. 2. In a refrigerating apparatus, the combination of. en outer housing having air edniitting. openings. eoveed with, e foraminous materiel and` open et. its upper end, a lining With-iu the housing spaced" therefrom end having Closed. and. vcontinu.ous portions opposite the eil edliiittipg openings of. the housing, treporti-tine; panels 'disposed in. the spaces 4between the. housing and the lining and removable through the open i501) of the housing, atop member removably mounted on the housing, a water tank mounted onthe top. member having means for supplying Water to the panels, and a door. mounted on the housingV having an exposed evaporating panel'. receiving Water from the tank.
in a refrigeletiiig apparatus, the oombination with an outer housing having openings, and a lining Within the housing and spaced therefrom, of removable evaporating panels voniprising. marginal frames support-4 ing a sheet of fabric, guides at each side of they openings receiving the panels, a dooi` having a panel exposing opening, an evaporatingpanel carried by the door, means for Supplying Witter to the door penel when the door is `closed, and means "for conveying the Waterfroin the'door.
