Description

W. H. RHODES.
Improvement in Stump-Extractors.
Patented Aug. 6,187 2.
Zzvz$aw "k. MWKRQF W UNITED STATES WILLIAM E. RHODES, oErAw PAW, MICHIGAN.
" IMPROVEMENT IN STUMP-EXTRACTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,242, dated August 6, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. RHoDEs, of Paw Paw, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Extractors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to furnish a device which shall be simple in construction, light and efficient in operation, and durable in use; and it consists in so attaching or arranging the chains upon the lever that while one is being drawn tight, while raising the stump, the other chain is given a corresponding amount of slack, so that when the lever is down from one side this slack chain may be taken up, the power applied to the other end of the lever, and the operation of drawing or pulling the stump continued without blocking up the stump to hold the same in position, as is usually the case in this class of machines.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a machine embodying my invention, and Fig.
- 2 is a longitudinal section of one of the leat an angle, the better to brace the machine,
regardless of what direction the strain may be applied; and by arranging the braces in the manner described, and using the same in connection with the supplemental braces G G, the machine is perfectly braced without the use of the metal brace-rods usually required. D represents the top cross-bar, which is supported in position by the braces, as above described. This cross-bar has a slot, at,
through which the links 0 are supported by the small bars or pins 1). F represents the lever, (two of which may be used, when desired, as represented by dotted lines,) having two or more pulleys at each end for the operation of the blocks and tackle H I. The said lever has a slot in the center,.as shown in Fig. 2. The lever is supported by the link 0 at d, the point of bearing being above the points of bearings of the lifting-chains J J at 'c 0, one upon either side of the center of the lever. The purpose of having the two liftingchainsone upon each side of the center-is that as one chain is drawn up tight the other is, by the same motion, given a corresponding amount of length of slack, which is taken up, when the opposite side of the lever is drawn up, as far as possible. The stump is then held in place, or held up, and the power is applied to the other end of the lever, and the operation so continued until the stump is lifted completely out of the ground. G represents a bar, placed beneath the machine simply for the purpose of showing how the lifting-chain is attached to the stump. The links f f are constructed in the formshown for the purpose of locking the chain in proper position as the slack in the lifting-chains is taken up, as the narrow portion of the link will not allow the links of the chain to slide through.
The leverage may be adjusted to a greater or less distance by the perforations h h in the lever F.
The advantage of placin g the bearing-points of the lifting-chains J J below the points of support of the lever, as described, is that as the lever is drawn up and down in lifting the stump the chains J J do not come in contact with each other and become entangled, as would be the case were the chains J J attached to the upper side of the lever.
The cross-bar D may be formed of two separate pieces and bolted together, if desired, gr by any other convenient mode of construc- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1.- The chains J J, blocks H H, and links f f, arranged with the lever F so that the slack in one chain may be taken up as the other f 1 2 tee eee is drawn ti 'lit, substantially as and for the my own I affix my signature in presence of purpose set forth. two witnesses.
2. The lever F, having its points of support WM. H. RHODES. at d above the points of supports a e of the chains J J, substantially as and for the pur- W'itnesses: pose herein described. U. ALEXANDER, In testimony that I claim the ioregoing as J 01m A. ELLIS.
