POLE SETTER.
Application filed October 6, 1924. Serial No. 71,965.
To all whom t .may concern.'
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM E. FRANK'-` LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing lat Earlham, in the county oi Madison and State ot Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Iole Setter, ot which the following is a specification.
"'.lhe object ot my invention is to provide a pole setter ot simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction adapted to be folded-into a comparatively small amount ot space so that it can be carried conveniently upon a light automobile truck.
In this connection, it may be mentioned that it is quite desirable to have a device whereby the setting ot telephone poles in rural communities may be easily and quickly completedwhere only one man is available to do the work, as is the case in rural communities where the telephone lines are kept in order by a single trouble man over' a certain amount of territory.
It is, therefore, my object to provide a device which can'be collapsed or folded and which can be positioned so that a telephone pole can be placed in the ground without over-taxing the st-rength ot the worker or trouble man.
1With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination ot the various parts ot' my device, whereby the objects contemplated are' attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

`In the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference characters A, B and C to indicate the three legs of the device.
The legs A and B are each connected at their upperV ends with U fittings 10, which receive a pipe or tubular member. 11 Aand are secured thereto by rivets 12. f
. The rivets 12 permit thelegsiA and Bto pivot therearound-so that they can be po sitioned close together or spaced apart as desired. v
The leg C, which is the third leg,'has iiXed to its upper end a yokeclement 13 by means ot the rivets 14.
Each ot the endsot the yokcl are spaced somewhat apart and are formed with U be formed in which is received the member 11.
`The lingers of the U 15 are connected to-y gether by aA rivet or bolt 16 which is posi= tioned above the member 11, as clearly shown in Figure t ot the drawing. f
rllhe member 11 has liXed to it an eye bolt 17 which is connected to eye bolts 18 on the legs A and B by chains 19. The chains 19 limit 'the amount 'ot outward pivotal movement ot the legs.
From the construct-ion ot the parts just described, `it will be seen that the legsA and B can be swung on their pivots 12 and that the leg C can be swung upon the member 11 at its pivot. y
rlhe leg B has a stub leg 2O secured thereto by two fittings 21 and 28. One fitting is secured to the leg B and the other to the leg shaped projections 15 so that a pocket may 2O.` The fittings are slidable relative to the l leg B or 2O so that they may be clamped thereto, thus permitting adjustment ot the leg 2O relative to the leg B.
In order to lock the litting21 relative to.V
the leg B and to lock the litting 23 relative to the leg 20, I provide a thumb screw 211 in each of the ttings 21 and 23.
From the construction ot' the parts just described, it will be seen that by loosening the two thumb screws 24, I am able to adjust the position of the leg member 20 upon the leg B.
Formed as part of the fitting oi the yoke 1B, is a pulley 25, whichy has extended therearound a rope or the like 26. One end of the rope 2G is fastened to a windlass D, whichI will now describe in det-ail.
The windlass D includes a fitting or frame 26 having a longitudinal groove therein which receives the leg C and is secured therearound by rivets or bolts 27 extendingl through the openings 28.
The tting or frame D includes two spacedl supports 29 in which is a pair of shafts 30 and 31.
A gear 32 is mounted upon the shaft 30, which is in mesh with the gear 33 formed as a part of a drum 34 mounted upon the shaft 31.
The shaft 30 has a handle 35 secured thereto whereby the drum may be operated 'by rotation thereof.
The rope 26 is iixe'd to the drum 84.
In order to lock the rotation of the shaft 30 in a backward direction, when it is being operated, I provide a pivoted pawl 36, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the dra-wings.
The rope 26 is secured to a telephone pole 37 designed to be set in the ground just beyond its center, as clearly shown in Figure l of the drawings.
In order to prevent the support or setter from upsetting, I secure a chain or the like 38 to the eye bolt 17, which chain I wrap around the butt or lower end of the pole 37 so that when I rotate the windlass and elevate the pole 37 the chain 38 serves to maintain the three legged device in proper position until the pole is moved to vertical posit-i on.
I have used my pole setter in actual prac-l Y parts of my invention, without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claim, any modified forms of structure or use o mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably'included Within its scope.
I claim as my invention:
A pole setter comprising a devicev having three legs` secured at their upper end to a common member and each being capable of pivotal movement relative to the common member, a` windlass on oneof said' legs, a pulley positioned' near said common member, a flexible element secured to said windlass extending around -said pulley and adapted to have its free end secured to the pole to be setv and a second flexible element .secured to the three legged device for Vanchoring to the butt end of the pole to be set for maintaining the three legged member inl upright position.
