Be it lrnown that I, HARRY S. APPLEGATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California,` have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to chairs and the primary object of the invention is to provide a yfolding article of furniture of this character which is so constructed that when folded the weight of the seat of the chair will act in opposition to the unfolding of the chair irrespective of the position in which the chair may be carried or placed.

Another object of the invention Vis to provide a chair of this character which is so constructed that when folded a frame comprising the front legs of the chair and a seat will lie wholly within a frame which constitutes the chair back and the rear legs of the chair.

With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

The preferred embodiment of the inven tion has been illustrated in the accompany ing drawing7 although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alteratOIls and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to if desired.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chaii constructed in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the chair and showing the same folded.

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 2.

Fig. A is a cross section on the line Ll-l of Fig. 2.

Like characters of reference denote the corresponding parts throughout the various views in the drawing.

Referring now to the drawing in detail the letter A designates a chair constructed in accordance with the invention and including a frame 5 which provides the rear legs and back of the chair.

The frame 5 may be formed from any material suitable for the purpose and includes side rails 6 and 7 which are braced by crossed bars 8 disposed between cross strips 9 and 10 connected with the side rails of the frame. The cross strips 10 are preferably two in number and coact with the rails 6 and 7 in providing the Vchair A with a back.

A seat frame 11 extends between the side rails 6 and 7 and is pivotally connected with these rails adjacent the lower of the cross strips 10, so that the frame 11 may be swung upwardly to lie between the side rails 6 and 7 and against the cross strip 10. The side bars of the seat frame 11 are of suflicient length to extend beneath and contact with the lower cross strips 10 when the seat frame is in a horizontal position, thus enabling the frame 5 to limit the extent to which the seat frame 11 may be moved in a downward direction.

A second frame 12 which serves as the front leg of the chair A has the side rails thereof arranged to extend at their upper ends within the frame 1l, to which the side rails of the frame 12 are pivotally iconnected. A pair of brace bars 13 are pivotally connected at one end with the frame 12 and extend within the frame 5 to the side rails of which, the bars 13 are pivotally con I nected.

To the above described manner of connecting and Varranging` the frame 12, the brace bars 13 and the seat 11 with relation to the frame 5 it will be apparent with reference to the drawing that when the chair is folded, the frame 11, frame 12 and brace bars 13 will lie wholly within the frame 5,

With reference to the drawing it will be seen that by so constructing the chair the above mentioned parts lie wholly within the frame 5 when the chair is folded, and the weight of the seat frame 11 will act in opposition to the unfolding of the chair when the same is carried in a vertical position, due to the fact that the downward movement of the seat frame will force the lower end of the frame 12 against the frame 5 and thus prevent further movement of the parts.

Formed in the lower rail of the frame 12 is a recess 14 in which the fingers may be inserted to swing the frames 12 and 11 from within the frame 5 when the chair is folded. Each of the frames 5 and 12 have fixed to the side rails thereof spurs 15 which prevent movement of the chair. Y

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing7 it is apparent that an inexpensive and durz.- ble foldable chair has been provided which is so constructed that when folded the weight of the seat of the chair will act in opposition to the unfolding thereof.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

A folding chair comprising a back frame, consisting of vertical members and cross pieces connecting said members together, a seat frame pivoted to Said Vertical members and adapted to be swung upwardly between said members, said seat frame having` its side members projecting rearwardly and Contact ing with one of the oross pieces when the seat frame is swung downwardly, a front frame pivoted in the front end of the seat frame and fitting in said frame when the chair is folded, with its lower end contacting with some of the cross pieces of the back frame to hold the chair in folded position, said lower end having a out out portion to form a finger hold for unfolding the chair, braces pivotally connected with the lower part of said front frame and clamping bolts connecting the rear ends of said braces to the lower ends of the vertical members of the back frame.
