Description

J. MOLVIG.
PROTECTIVE SHlELD FOR SMALL FIREARMS.
APPLICATION HLED MAY 1!). \9H- 1,301,293. Patented Apr. 22,1919.
WM @Houw/Z ar'i'fisnonvre,
v To all whom it may concern:
' I Be it known that I, JENS MOLVIG, a citi- Y zen of the'United States, residing at Buxton, infthecounty ofTraill and State of North V Dakota, havelinvented certain useful Im- .provements in Protective Shields for Small Firearms, of which the following is a speoifi I cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. I This invention relates to protective shields for small firearms. f This invention aims to provide in the first instance a shield which is easily removable 'from and readily afiixed to a fire arm and which does not necessitate the annexation ofau'xiliar'y fixtures to the firearm, in order to adapt it for. receiving and supporting the shield. A coordinate object of the invenja'shield for sustaining the impact of projectiles laterally of the longitudinal axis of I ,thejfirearm- V A furtherobject of the invention is to so construct the fixtures of the shield that they --inaybe collapsed topermit packing of a .numberof shields together in a small parcel "I to facilitate transportation. I I .A 'still further object of the invention is toremovably mount the firearm engaging members upon the shield to permit. adjustffment thereof to various sizes and types of firearms.
With these and other objects in view the -pr'esent invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more ffully described, illustrated in the accom- 'panying drawing and particularly pointed outin the appended claim, it being under- ;-stoodthat changes may be made in the form, j'proportiomsize and minor details without departingjfrom. the spirit of the invention. In thelaccompanying drawing: j Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the shield aflixed to a firearm.
Fig. 2is a perspective view of the shield 1 detached but engaging .a rifle band by Way of illustration.
Fig; 3 is a modification. Referringnow more particularly, to the ao iaccompanying drawings like characters of Specification of Letters Patent.
,tion is to provide means in connection with:
' ED. saATEs P TENT onnion. I
reference indicate like or similar parts throughout the several views.
A common type of firearm has the usual barrel :1, stock 2 and fore-stock 3 upon which is mounted the band 4 provided with a screw threaded opening 4.
The shield 5 has an opening 6 through which the barrel 1 and fore-stock 3 extend,
I the opening 6 being sutficiently large to permit sighting of the firearm therethrough. A pair of movable brackets 7 for engaging the fore-stock 3 have opposed outstanding arms 8 carrying thumb screws 9 and are adjustably mounted upon the shield 5 by means of thumb screws 10 extending through transverse slots 11. Upon positioning the shield 5 upon the firearm the brackets are moved until the arms 8 thereof abut opposite sides of the forestock 3 and are so held by tightening thumb screws 10 whereupon the thumb screws 9 are turned to bind the shield in position.
Mounted on the shield on opposite sides of the opening 6 are a pair of opposed socket attachments 12 within which are held ball portions 13 of the lateral supports 14 to form a substantially universal connection between the supports and the shield 5. The free terminal ends of the support 14 are slightly bent to form feet and have mounted thereon thumb screws 15 for engagement within the openings 4' in the band 4 to hold the shield in place and sustain lateral impact of projectiles thereupon.
In the modification, the band 4 is provided with thumb screws 15' about which the arms 16 of the bifurcated-terminals 17' of the supports extend and are held.
When it is desired topack the shields the supports 14 are folded inwardly thereupon to make a small and compact parcel readily transported from place to place.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a firearm, of a rectangular shield formed with an opening through which there passes the barrel and fore-stock of a firearm, the opening being of sufiicient size to permit sighting of the firearm therethrough, brackets adjustably secured on the rear of the shield and on I Patented Apr. 22, 1919.
