DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE;
7 To all whom "it may concern Be it known that we, Lns'mn STEWART BARR and BENJAMIN STANLEY SIMMONS, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices, and particularly to a device provided with a surface atthe'cente'r upon which may be posted daily bulletins or other matter intended to attract attention, one or more marginal frames surrounding the center surface being provided with spaces to carry advertising.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a simple, inexpensive and attractive advertising device of the above character, in which the advertising matter can be easily changed.
The above and other objects and the novel features of our invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawing which constitutes a part of this application and in which,
Figure 1 is a front view of an advertising device embodying our invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a detail view taken on the line 33 of Fig. l.
The advertising device may be made of wood,-metal or other suitable material and comprises a box-like structure consisting of the rectangular inclosing casing 10 and the bottom 11 secured to and closing the casing 10 at the rear.
A rectangular frame F consisting of the top, bottom and side members 12, 13, 1 1 and 15 is secured to the front face of the bottom 11, centrally thereof. A rectangular space at the center of the front of the bottom is thus inclosed or surrounded on all sides and this space constitutes the bulletin board B of the device upon which daily bulletins or other matter of a similar nature may be posted. The top, bottom and sides of the frame F are inclined to the plane of the bulletin board B and the ends thereof are cut at an angle and fitted together to form a rectangular marginal frame around the bulletin board, resembling the molding of a picture. The inclined outer surface of the frame F is designed to carry advertis- Specilication of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 22, 1919. Application filed May 7, 1917. Serial No. 167,010.
ing matter so that persons who are attracted to read the bulletin or matter carried by the bulletin board B will be tempted to also read the advertising carried by the frame or frames surrounding the bulletin.
Strips 16 are secured to and extend across the top, bottom and sides of the frame F and divide the advertisement-carrying surface of the frame into spaces which may be rented to advertisers for displayingtheir cards or advertising matter. Referring to Fig. 3 each of the strips 16 is under-cut along its longitudinal edges as at 17 and 18 to provide recesses to receive the edges of cards so that the advertising matter may be readily changed from time to time. A molding. 18 is secured to the outer ends of the strips 16 and extends around the outer edge of the frame F to assist in retaining the advertising cards in place and also to improve the appearance of the devic A second or outer rectangular adver ising frame F has its top, bottom and sides 121, 131, 141 and 151, respectively, overlapping and secured to the top, bottom and sides of the inner frame F. The outer end of the frame F is secured to the rectangular cas ing 10 and the entire frame F is inclined to the bulletin board B and offset outwardly with respect to the inner frame F so that the advertising matter or cards may be readily inserted into the recesses 17 and" 18 from the front of the device. The outer frame F is also provided with cross strips 16 having under-cut edges to provide recesses corresponding to the recesses 17 and 18 of Fig. 3. A molding 181 is secured to the outer ends of the strips 16 of the frame F to hold the cards in the spaces formed by the cross strips.
The device is designed to be mounted on a wall or supported in a Window to exhibit bulletins which may be changed from time to time and also to display advertising in the spaces surrounding the bulletin board.
While we have shown and described the Y device in detail, it is to be understood that for bulletins or advertising, a plurality of substantially rectangular frames secured to the front of said board and each entirely surrounding said space, each of said frames being offset with respect to the neXt inner frame, the advertisement-carrying surface of said frames being inclined to the plane of said board, and strips extending across and secured to one side of each of said frames to provide separate spaces on the o frame for advertising cards or the like, each strip having its edges under-cut to receive the edges of the advertising cards to hold them in place.
2. A11 advertising device comprising a bulletin board having on its front a space for posting bulletins or advertising, an inner rectangular frame secured to the front of said board and entirely surrounding said space, an outer rectangular frame secured to and surrounding the inner rectangular frame, each of said frames having an advertisement-carrying surface inclined to the plane of the bulletin board, strips secured at intervals to the advertisement-carrying surfaces of said frames and having undercut edges to receive the edges of advertising matters to hold them in place, said strips dividing the advertisement-carrying surfaces into separate spaces, and the outer frame being offset with respectto the inner frame to permit the insertion and'removal of advertising cards into or from the'spaces of the inner frame.
In testimonywhereof We afiix our signatures.
