J. V. PALMER.
. CHAIR.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 13,1918.

2 SHEETSSHEET I.
JOHN V. PALMER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA. v
' CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed November 13, 1918. Serial No. 262,360.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN V. PALMER, citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification. This invention has for its object the pro- "vision of means whereby an ordinary dining room chair may be utilized as a highchair for a child when so desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a highchair which may be carried by the seat of a dining room chair and folded into compact form so as to be supported within the seat frame when not in use.
These objects and other objects which will incidentally appear in the course of the following description, are obtained in such a device as is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the invention consists in certain novel features which will be particularly pointed out in the claims following the description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dining room chair having my invention applied thereto and showing it as it appears for use in the usual manner;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the highchair'arranged for use;
Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the highchair folded;
; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the seat and seat frame of the dining chair and showing the highchair housed therein;
Fig. 5 is a view, partly in section and partly in side elevation, showing the assemblage of the parts prior to the lowering of the chair seat.
The dining chair may be of any approved design embodying a back 1, legs 2 and a seat frame 3. The seat 4 of the dining chair may be provided with a cushion 5 and is utilized as the back of the highchair when the latter is in use. The seat is provided at its rear edge with a bar or cleat 6 which is secured rigidly to the seat proper at a ri ht angle thereto and is intended to fit wit in the seat frame in normal position, as shown in Fi 4. .To the free edge of this bar, cleat or rai 6 I secure, by hinges 7, a foot plate 8 which is adapted to provide a rest for the feet of the child when the highchair is in use and when in use fit within a notch or recess 9 provided in the front rail of the seat frame 3. -Wl1en the highchair is not in use the plate 8 is supported by a rest 10 secured to the front rail of the seat frame ,3 and projecting rearwardly therefrom at the lower edge thereof, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. Upon the under side of the seat 4 parallel with the side edges of the same and near the side edges, I secure cleats or strips 11 to which are secured, by hinges 12, the side members 13 of the highchair. These side members 13 may be solid, as illustrated in the drawings, or may be of any other preferred design and they are provided at their lower edges with flanges or lips l4which support the seat member l5 hinged at its rear edge to the under side of the seat 4 and adapted to fit between the side members and rest on the said flanges 14, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Bracing arms 15 are pivoted at their rear ends to the strips 11 and are provided with longitudinal slots 16 engaging over pins 17 on the inner sides of the side rails of the seat frame 3, as will be readily understood. The free endsofthesebraces are constructed to provide offsets 18 from the slots 16 so that if the offset portions of the slots be engaged over the pins 17. the braces will be held against movementand will support the combined'seat and back 4 in its raised position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The side members 13 are equipped along their 'upper edges with longitudinally curved cleats .19 whereby sockets or chambers are provided to receive the side extensions or arms 20 of the tray 21,- and spring latches 22 may be provided upon the side members at the front edges thereof to engage the said side arms or extensions and thereby hold the tray in its proper operative position when the highchair is in use. on the highchair is to be folded the tray is -withdrawn from its engagement with the side members and is disposed between the folded side members 13 and the-foot rest 8. Hooks 23, hung upon the rails or strips 11, engage pins or eyes upon the side edges of the foot rest to hold the parts in folded relation, as shown in Fig. 5.
When the device is arranged for use as a highchair the chair seat 4 is, swung upwardly about its hinged connection 25 with the side rails of the seat frame 3 so as to rest against the back 1 of the chair. The hooks 23 are then released so that the tray may be removed after which the side members are swung out to stand at right angles recess or notch 9 so that it will be firmly supported-and'furnish a firm rest for thechilds feet. After the child is seated the tray 21 is brought into position by engaging its side arms or extensions in the cleats 19 and permitting the latch 22 to operate, as will be readily understood. When the highchair is no longer to be used the tray is removed,
the seat 15 folded against the combined back and seat 4, after which the side members 13 are folded over across the seat. The tray is then'piaced against the outer side member and the foot rest 8 swung up and secured by the "books 23, as shown in Fig.
0. The braces 15 are then releasedan'd the folded device swung forwardly and downwardly to be supported by the rest 10 and housed within the seat frame. The dining chair may then be usedin the usual manner.
My device is exceedingly simple in the construction and arrangement of its parts and may be very easily adjusted. l/Vhen adjusted for use as a highchair it will be firmly supported and cannot collapse while a child is seated therein.- 1 V Having thus I described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A chain comprising a seat frame, a seat hinged amen the side members of the seat frame, a rail rigid with the rear edge of the seat and dlsposed at a right angle theretoWhereby to fit within the side members of the seat frame, aplate hinged to said rail,
a rest on the seat frame for said plate, and a collapsible seat carried by the under side of said chair seat.
2. In a chair, the combination of a seat frame, a chair seat hinged upon the side members of the said seat frame, the. front portion of the seat frame being provided with a recess in its upper side, a rearwardly projecting rest on said seat frame. front member, a plate hingedly connected with the chair. seat and having its free endadapted to engage said recess and bear upon said rest, and a collapsible seat mounted. upon the under side of said chair seat.
3..In .a. chair, the combination of a seat frame, a chair seathingedly secured upon said seat frame, rails secured to theunder side of said chair seat near-the side edges thereof, braces pivoted to said rails "and supported on the side members of the seat frame, a suppl'en'iental seat. hinged to the underside of the chair seat between said rails to fold against the chair seat, and side members hinged to said rails to swing across supports for said supplemental seat.
