Description

E. NIELSEN.
TABLE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 3. 1913.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
x union.
ELIN NIELSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TABLE.
Application filed June 3, 1918. Serial N 0. 237,908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIN NIELSEN, a sub ject of the King of Denmark, residing at Chicago, Cookcounty, State of Illinois, have invented certain newjand useful Improvements in Tables, 'ofwhich the following, taken in connection with the drawings, is a description.
My invention has for its object the production of a table designed tobe used more particularly in a work room of dress makers, tailors, milliners, and others who employ people requiring table space, and a convenient place to keep materials, thread, needles, etc., being used.
A further object of my invention is to so construct such a table that it will occupy a minimum of space in the work room when not in use, and when in use will permit the table tops to be drawn out from the frame of the table, to provide an individual table for each worker.
A further object of my invention is to provide a table of the class described having a bin, or receptacle beneath each table top, to hold the material being used, which receptacle is open when the table top is withdrawn, giving free access to the contents of the receptacle, and when not in use, the table top forms a cover for the receptacle, completely inclosing the materials, and pro tecting them from dust, etc.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated what I now consider the preferred form of my invention, although it is obvious that various changes may be made in the form and construction of the same without departing from the spirit thereof, and in these drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view of my table, the dotted lines representing the table tops partially withdrawn;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view with'the table tops removed; 7
Fig. 3 is a side elevation;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view, with the table tops in one section thereof removed, and in the other section with one table top in closed position, and one partially extended.
In the drawings I have illustrated my invention comprising 4 StlO1lS,rOl compartments, 2 sections on each side of the table, but I wish to be understood as contemplating a table with any number of sections desired to accommodate the work to be done.
Referring to these drawings, A represents uprights connected together, and braced in any suitable manner, as at a-a, to provide a supporting frame for the construction.
At each end of the table are transversely extending side pieces, BB, each of which is provided with grooves, a a on the inside thereof, and extending downwardly from each of which is a side member cut on parallel lines to meet the center partition C:
The table may be made any length desired, divided into sections by a transversely extending strip, 6, which is provided with corresponding grooves, bb upon the opposite sides thereof, corresponding to the grooves aa arranged in the side pieces,
Slidably arranged in the grooves, aa and bb are the table tops, B-B adapted to move in opposite directions, to provide a table for each operator, and when the table top is partially withdrawn, as B in Fig. 5, each workman will have an individual table, with a receptacle 0 or 0, for the material being used. G is a partition extending longitudinally in the center thereof, which divides the table into sections at each side, and forms a dividing wall be tween the receptacles, c0', one of which is arranged in operative relation with each table top.
Beneath each table top is a small receptacle, D, designed for holding thread, needles, thimbles, and small accessories used in sewing rooms.
D is an inclined wall extending from the bottom of each receptacle, cc, to contact with the edge of the receptacle, D.
The ends of the compartments, c0, are formed by the transverse partitions, D which are preferably located directly under the members b-B, thereby making the compartments equal in length to the table tops.
When the table is in use an operator sits at each movable section, BB Each table top can be adjusted to the convenience of the individual opera-tor, independently of the other table tops. 7
I claim:
1. In a table of the class described, the combination with uprights and bracing members of an upper surface consisting of a plurality of adjacent transverse sections, said sections being separated by transversely extending grooved strips spaced at intervals across the top of the table, a plurality of table tops slidably movable laterally in said sections, a vertical longitudinal central partition extending the entire length of the table, side members, the lower extremity of which meets said central partition at an oblique angle, transverse end partitions ex-' tending between said central and side partitions, and spaced at intervals corresponding to saidstrips, said partitions forming receptacles beneath the table tops, said table tops adapted to overlap each other and form covers for said receptacles when the table is not in use.
2. In a table of the'class described, the combination with uprights and bracing members, of an upper surface consisting of a to the center of the table and having its outside partition arranged at oblique angle to the inside partition; the smaller compartment being nearest to the outside of the table, said oblique partition being extended to contact with the under side at its upper extremity, said compartments being closed by sliding the aforesaid table tops into overlapped position.v
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification, this 18th'day ofMay, L918. ELIN NIELSEN.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents Washington, D. G.
