IMPRQVEMENT I-N SNAP-HCOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,033, dated July 30, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
` I, LAFAYETTE FLAGG, of Peru, in the county of Miamiand State .of Indiana, have invented an Improvement in Snaps for Harness, the same being designated as a safety-snap, of which the following is a description and specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
A A is a general view of the body of the snap, constructed in any of the usual and proper'forms, with the necessary arrangement for attaching the same to the desired part of harness.` Bris a lever, Working on a pivot or fastening at K, and joining the smaller end of the curve of the snap at G by means of a curved joint fitting against the' surface of the endsmoothly. G is a hollowed recess in the main part of the snap, of such size as to re.
ceive the lever B when pressed down into it, and also to receive the lever D and the double spring E E. D is a second lever, Working on a pivot at H, and fitting accurately in a notch the other pressing against the lever-D in a notch at L, below the point or fulcrum H. M is a depression in the snap to receive the thumb or finger in pressing down the lever B.
The operation of the several parts is as folloWs: By pressing on the lever D at F it is thrown out of the notch in the lever B at I, when the lever B may be' pressed down at M into the cavity G, thus opening the snap to permit a ring or other fastening to pass into the hook. The pressure being removed, the springs E E act as follows: first, by pressure on the lever B, throwing it back to its proper place, closing the hook atC; and the spring E E,- acting at the same time on the lever D, forces it into the notch at I, thus securely and doubly holding the lever B in position, and
effectually preventing it from becoming un` fastened by any of the usual accidents likely to occur.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the hook A, of the latch B, dog D, and curvedspring E, the respective legs of which actuate the latch and dog, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified. l
