Description
iA'rIEN'r `ALONZO M. MACE, OF NEEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,973, dated July 30, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, ALONZ M. MAGE, of Needham, inl the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Kerosene and other Carbonaceous Oil Lamps, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l ofthe accompanying drawing represents a central vertical section of my improved lamp.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lamps for burning kerosene and other carbonaceous oils, or their equivalents, whereby Vthe use of chimneysis dispensed with and a steady and brilliant flame, without disagreeable odor, is produced, and the liability of accident from the overheating of the reservoir-cap is prevented.
vMy improvements consist, mainly, in so arranging an air-chamber in connection with double-wick tubes ofa kerosene or other equivalent oil lamp as to cause the cool air to enter the bottom of said chamber and pass up and circulate around the said wick-tubes, thereby preventing them from absorbing too much heat from the ame, and so cooling the cap of the lamp-reservoir as to avoid the possibility y of danger from its overheating, also, of so arranging a supplementary cap in connection with the air-chamber and a perforated or other holder or frame as to force the heated air as'- cendingaround the upper portion of the wicktubes to pass between the top of the`wicktubes, thereby supplying the flame with the hot oxygen necessary to makef good combustion, and so that the heat absorbed by the cap from the wick-tubes shall be conveyed to it and be taken up by the air passing through or in contact with it,.and conveyed to the secondary or ordinary burners, thereby supplying them with hot oxygen and insuring an even, brilliant iiame, free from disagreeable odor or smoke, &c.
. In the drawing, A represents the body or reservoir: of a lamp, provided with a cap, b, in
' which screws the bottom of a screw-base, d,
in which turn two parallel arbors carrying two pairs of ratchet-wheels, one pair, e c', shown in the drawing, the ratchets of each arbor en gaging withthose of the opposite arbor and with wicks f f l that are operated up and down in vertical parallel tubes, g gf, extending up from the top of the base d, and sloping toward each other fet the top. Attached to or formed on a perforated dome or other suitable-shaped cap or frame, h, and extending over the wick-tubes g g', and, if desired, over the base ol,\at a proper distance, is a conical or other suitable-shaped tube, k, which forms a space or air-chamber, p, between it and the outside of the wick-tubes g g. Attached to or formed in one piece with the top of the 4perforated cap or frame h is a` cap, l, its sides extending upward and diminishing at the top,
.which is of a sufficient distance below the top of the wick-tubes g g' to yprevent any-smoke from the flame or charring of the wick. Rest# ing upon or supported by the cap or frame h is a secondary burner, m, arranged, as ordinarily, with an inner burner, n, slots m uf, and air-space o.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Light being applied to the wicks f f, which pass up from the reservoir a through the tubes g g', which are arranged, as shown, parallel to each other, and with a passage between and around them for the circulation of air, which, by the heat communicated to the wicks ff', is carried up from below the bottom of the airchamber p around the wick-tubes g g', thus preventing them from absorbing too much heat, and directing the cool air against the cap b of the lamp-body a, thereby obviating the possibility of any accident from the explosion of gas in the top of the reservoir or body a by the overheating of the cap b, the air, passing up the air-chamber b, becomes heated yas it reaches the top, where, by means of the sloping cap L, it is carried around and between the topV of the wick-tubes g g', thereby supplying the flame with hot oxygen and perfecting the combustion. By means of the cap l, connecting with the perforated or other cap or frame h, and which may be formed as a continuation of the tube k, if desired, the heat absorbed from the wick-tubes g g by the cap l is conveyed to the cap or frame h, and taken up by the air passing through or in contact with it, and conveyed through the secondary burners m and n, thereby supplying them with hot oxygen, and producing a clear, steady rrrcn.
light, free from disagreeable odor, and there by obviating the use of chimneys.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, isp- The combination of the double-wick tubes g g', seb at such im angle as to produce a compound ame, with the air-chamber p, the cap l, the perforated or equivalent cap or frame h,
and burners m n, arranged in an in-chimney lamp, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my neme to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALONZO M. MACE.
