IMPRQVEMENTiNLAMPS- Specification forming part' of Letters Patent No. 30,381, dated October 16, 1860; reissue No; 5,412, dated May 20, 1873 reissue No. 6,844, dated January 11, 1876; application filed December 9, 1875.
To all whom yit may concern Be it known that l, JOSHUA E. AMBROSE, of Plattsville, in the county of Weld and Territory of Colorado, have invented a newlinprovement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken ,in connection with the' accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute'part of .this specitication, and represent, in-
Figure 1, vertical central section; Fig. 2, top view; Fig. 3, atop view'with the heater detached; Fig. 4, detached y'plan lor top view of the wick-adjuster.
This invention reialesto an improvement in that class of burners designed for burning hydrocarbons. In this class of burners the wick-adjuster must necessarily penetrate the with the wick tube and adjuster sucha means of escape for the gas thatit may pass so freely directly to the dame as to be there consumed, and thus prevent its escape around the ad.-
'uster' also the'construction of a burner which may be used without a chimney.
The invention consists, first, in combining with the wick tube and adjuster `an auxiliarypassage leading directly from the lamp up to y within such lproximity to the ame that the gas from the lamp, iowing freely through this auxiliary passage, will pass to and be consumed by the llame; second, in-combining in a lamp-burner a. defiector, a perforated airdistribufer, with the deflector forming the combustion-chamber, awicktube extending l from the fount tothe combustion-chamber, an adjusting-device to ,regulate lthe elevation' ot' vthe wick, and a. tubetto conduct the ges, froiu 'lhe object of this invention is to combinel the fount to the chamber above .the air-distributer third, in the employinentof aperto rated cap, wick-tube,. heaters, and deflectiiig plate, combined land arranged as hereinafter described;` fourth,'in a wick-adjusting'mech'.i
-aiii'sm,arranged so as to admit of the wick bei ig elevated with certainty, and when not iii use allow tllie'well to be loose and free within the tubethat is, without any press-- ure from the adjuster-4to .allow the free flow of the oil.
A represents the lupper or neck portion of" the body of a lainp, provided at its upper end with the usuall socket B, vto lreceive the cap 0,; the lower end of the cap being provided with' a threaded iiange, ,'to' lit 'the correspondingthread in the socket. y The cap C is, by pret'- erence, of cylindrical forin, and constructed from perforated sheet metal, the lower end having a plate, b, fitted 'into it, the said plate'- beinga part of, or attached to,' the iian'ge'a.'
c is a perforated air distributer, which, with the delector, forms the combustion-chamber,
into which the wick-tube D extends. `Within` the tube the wick E is arranged, andthe tube is fitted with an, ladjuster, (here represented as an improved adjuster,) to be hereinafter described. An auxiliary tube or passage, F,I is formed, the lower end ot' which communi-4 cates with the interior ot' the body ofthe lamp, and the upper end opening'nearthe' upper end of tliewick-tube, so that the',gas' which is generated within the lamp, instead,
ofpassing outy through the opening in the tube for the wielr adjuster, as it otherwise would, will pass up through this tube Aor passage in suoli proximity to the ilame that itis consumed'. The. termination of this tubeis here represented as'at the perforated plate ,c,
the perforations ofthe plate being suicient for the free passage of' gasto the flame. On the upper 'end of the cap vC there is placed a copper dome- Vshaped heater, G, which is secured in proper position by a thumb-screw, m. This heater is slotted-at its upper end, as shown at mand at the center of the slot there is tted 'a longitudinal bar, the latter div-ding the slot-aiuto two equallongitudinal parts. rlhe wiektube D extends some distance above the perforated platee, and on its upper end a'collar, p, is fitted, ythe said collar Vhaving plates q projecting from it, slightly vinclined from a horizontal plane. Between the outer edges of the plates q and the collar p there are openings rr'.v 0n the outer side of the heater G there are vertical ribs s, at the lower ends of which there are projections t. These projections t serve as bearings for a eater, H, which is similar to G in form. rlhe ribs and projections t admit of a space, "u, being between the two heaters, and the upper end of the heater H is slotted, as shown at e, Fig. 2, and has plates fw, extending upward fromeach end of it, and inclined. toward each other at an angle of about forty-tive degrees. lThe plates q of the collar p and the openings r canse a draft to ascend directly upwardl to the dame, and airis 'also deflected directly against the inner sides of the heater (i, and hecomesintensely heated, so as to supply the lflame with warm oxygen. The bar o in the slot n of the heater G serves `to'divide the tlame, and prevents it from ascending up through the sloth before the carbon is consinned. Between th two heaters G H oxygen passes, and becomes highly raretied, and unites with the carbon in the dame, insuring perfect combustion.
The plates w, atjthe ends of the slot vot' the. heater H, serve to spread the iame'gandv diminish its height, thereby keeping the Hame at the point .where the heat is most intense. The ila-,me at the slot nain the heater-Gris merelya gasgenerating fia-me, the illuminati ing dameA having its base at. the slot c ot' lthe heater H.. The wick-tube Dat 'one side (the sfide opposite that to'which the tube'F isattached) has an enlarged lspace or a chamber, d, in which the inner end of a horizontal shaft, passes. This shaft er has a horizontal rod, f, fitted on it, containingspurs g, the rod and spurs being within the chamber d. On the shaft e there is placed loosely a metal plate, h, the said plate being all the out-er side of the chamber d, the latter having its side ,slotted to -adniitthe s'hafte and r'od f.. On the shaft 'e there is placed a spiral spring, i, the inner end of which hears against the plate h, the
vouter end bearing against a plate or.step,rj,
which is'attached' permanently to the s'h'at'te. The spring ,twillbe seen, has a tendency tokee'p the shaft e shoved outward to the ein tent of thismo'vem'ent, and' keep the rod f and the wick 0n the shaft e, andat the outer 'side of.` the cap U, there is secured a plate, k. The shaft e .passes through a slot, l, in the cap C. y
' In order to raise or lower .the wick E the shaft e is pressed inward, and the spurs g will penetrate the wick, and by raising or lowering the shaft e the wick will be raised or lowered accordingly. The plate h covers the slot in the side of the chamber d, and prevents the escape ofgas or vapor from the wick-tube and chamber d. l The plate k retains the rod e in a horizontal position as' it is raised and lowered.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with the wick-tube and a mechanism for adjusting the wick, an auxil- `iary tube` or passage leading from the lamp upward, to conduct the gas from wit-hin the lamp to the llame without the` mixture of air `following elements; first, a detl'ector; second,
a perforated airsdistributer, Which, with the deiiector, forms the combustion-chamber; third, a wick-tube extendingfrom the fount tothe combustion-chamber; fourth, a tube or passage to .conduct the gas 'fromthe fount to said combustion-chamber; fifth, an adjusting device 'to regula-te the elevation of the' wick, si'lbstantiaily as described.
4. The combination of the heaters G H, with a space between them, communicatin g directly .with the external air, in connection with the collar p and plates q q, fitted on the top of the Wick-tube E, and the perforated cap C, substant-ially as and forthe purpose set forth.
5. '.lhe shaft e, provided with the rodf and spurs g, which are within the chamber d of the wick-tube, in connection with the plates hl j k and spring i on the said shaft, all being arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
