the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlng.

My improvement relates to account forms and index sheets,

comprising ledger sheets the sheets being put together in loose-leaf binders or arranged loosely in card ledger form.

The objects of the invention are (1) to produce a ledger comprising sheets ruled for a single or full-page account, while other sheets are ruled to receive more than one such account, and (2) to closely associate the account sheets with the index sheets, the full-page account sheets being in one group and the sheets hearing more than one account being in another group.

For convenience in description, the sheets bearing ruling to receive a single account will be termed full-page account sheets, while the sheets ruled to receive more than one accOunt are termed petty account sheets.

Referring to said drawings, 100 designates the index sheets, 101 designates the full-page account sheets, and 102 designates the petty account sheets. 7 The full-page account sheet, 101, any ordinary ledger form having along 1ts top edge a horizontal head space, 1, and having upright column spaces, 2, 2, extending downward from said head space. Said column spaces may be of anyconvenient number and grouping.

The petty account sheet, 102, has rulmgs for three small ledger accounts, each extending across the width of the page. 7, below each each head space is a name space, 9,,and an address space, 10, for receiving, respectively, the name and the address of the party whose account is to occupy the space below said head space. In the right hand portion of each head space is a serial designation of the number of the account on the page, said designations being, Acct. No. 1, Acct. No. 2, and Acct. No. 3. In the upper right hand corner of the sheet; is a sheet number space, 11, preceded by Sheet No. All these petty account sheets bear the serial numbers indicating the number of accounts on each sheet; but the sheets of the group are numbered serially; for example, if fifty such sheets are used in a group, they are numbered in the space, 11, from 1 to 50, inelusive, 1 being applied to the first and 50 to the last of said sheets.

These petty account sheets are preferably of a color differing from the color of the full-page account sheets, 101.

The ruling on the front of the fullpage account sheets may be repeated on the back, so that the account for that sheet may extend to both sides. The account forms'on the front of the petty account sheet may also appear on the back of the sheet, the forms on the two sides of the sheet being together numbered as one series.

The index sheets, 100, are used for indexing the accounts on the sheets, 101, and 102, one index serving for both classes of accounts.

All the index sheets are alike excepting as to the index characters used to designate the sheets. These index characters may be letters or numbers. The drawings show the sheet'in the account to,

letters .of the alphabet used serially for behind that sheet or pair of page account sheets being 7 spaces is a ter, A, and between the two ends of the sheet are the vowel letters, A, E, and I. On the other side of the sheet are the vowel letters, 0, U, and Y. Or this sheet may be followed by another sheet also having A in the upper, right hand corner and having on its front the vowel letters 0, U, and Y, substituted for the vowel letters, A, E, I. This sheet, 100, has the head space, 12, and the name column spaces, 13, 13, 13. At the right of each-namespace is a full-page account number space, 14. In the preferred arrangement, the account sheets'which are indexed on any index sheet (or pair of index sheets) are'placed directly sheets, the fullput'into one group and the petty account sheets being put into anothergroup. This grouping of the ac- V counts'heets with each other ,and with the index sheets reduces labor required for index identification and subsequent location of ac- :count sheets. Thus all the accounts in the entire book (or box, if the sheets are used in card form) are grouped in relatively small numbers to which search for a particular account is limited.

In making an entry concerning any account on the index sheets, the appropriate index sheet is found by using the first letter of the nameof the account. When the index sheet -has been thus found, the name column, 13, is found by taking the first *v 'wel of the name as a guide. When that column has been 'found,'the'name is entered in'that column, and the class of the account whether full-page or "petty, is designated by making an entry in either the column, 14,0r the column, 15,-at the right of the column in which the name has been entered. If it is a' full-page account, this entry is made in the column, 14-; and if it is serial number *ther designates number space,

a petty account, the entry is made in the column, 15. Thus the entry is given signi'ficance through location. The entry furthe serial position of the sheet to which the entry relates. For example,,if the sheet is a full-page account sheet and it bears the 17th account of the full-page account class behind that index sheet, the said full-page account sheet is made-to bear 1'7 in the account designation space,' 5, of Fig. 2, and the same number 17is written in said column, 14, opposite said column name. But, if the :account "sheetis a petty account sheet, the (for example, 18) ofthat sheet in the group of said sheets located behind said index sheet is entered in said 11 ,of Fig. 4, and said numher is entered in the column, of
