To a/ZZ wiz/0711, it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN L. C. MONTAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chris= tiansburg, in the county of Montgomery and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index-Books; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved form of index-book; and theobject is to provide a ledger or other book of this character with a simple and convenient alphabetical and numerical index.
To this end the invention consists in ablank book provided with a combined alphabetical and numerical marginalindex, as will be hereinafter more fully described,- and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The igure in the drawing is a perspective View of my improved book-index.
In the present arrangement I have allotted a certain number of pages to each letter of the alphabet; For instance, say, for the letter A I have set orf ten pages, and on the tab of the indexthe letter A appears, and immediatelyl below it is the number of the page. Twenty pages are now allowed for the letter B, and the said letter and the page-number are printed on the tab. The remaining pages are proportioned od in thesame manner and the ap propriate letter and page imprinted on the tab, so that in opening the book theproper page and letter can be instantly referred to. By this arrangement the space in the front of the book which is usually devoted to the in; dex is utilized for the text and the index distributed through the book where it can be secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
