FOLDING CHICKEN-CRATE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led December 3, 1918. Serial No. 265,122.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. GER- RARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Platte and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chicken- Crates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding chicken crates, and consists of a simple and eiicient device of this nature which, when not in use, may be folded in compact form for storage or shipment.
The .invention consists of various details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the crate open for use.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view longitudinally through the same, showing parts in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the crate collapsed, and
Fig. .4 is a sectional view longitudinally through Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Reference now being had'to the details of the drawings by letter:
A, A designate the opposite longitudinal side bars near the bottom of the crate, and B, B are slats fastened to the undersurfaces of said bars near their ends. and which slats project beyond the ends of the bars A. Strips C are fastened to the upper surfaces of the projecting portions of said slats and also to the ends of the bars which extend above the latter. Rectangular outlined partitions D have pintles E projecting from the ends of their inner longitudinal sides thereof and which are pivotally mounted in apertures near the ends of the bars A, said partitions being adapted to fold down to horizontal positions when the crate is collapsed, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. When the end partitions D are thrown to vertical positions they contact with the end strips C.
The sides of the crate are designated by letters F made up of strips, upon the ends of the inner of which are pintles E engaging apertures C in the ends of the strips C and are adapted to fold down into horizontal positions when collapsed, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Slats H have pivotal connection at H with each of said sides, as shown clearly in the drawings, and which will cause the two sides to collapse and be thrown to vertical positions together. The slats H have apertures K formed therein and when the crate is open for use are adapted to receive pins L which engage holes O formed in the end partitions D to hold the crate opened for use. Other apertures M are formed in the slats H, through which and the apertures K formed in the end slats H, are adapted to pass to hold the crate folded.
By the provision of a crate made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that the same may be easily and quickly folded when not in use and locked, as shown, and so constructed that the crate may be opened up for use and held in such adjustment by the means shown and described.
What I claim to be new is:
A folding crate having opposite longitudinal side bars with end pieces fastened thereto and projecting above the side bars, slats underneath the latter and secured to the side bars, sides having pintles pivotally connected to the end pieces above and adjacent to the upper edges of said side bars, folding` partitions having pintle ends pivotally connected to the side bars adjacent to said slats and designed, when opened, to bear against the inner faces of said end pieces, cross pieces hinged at their ends to In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my the upper edges of said sides und adapted Slglla-ture 1H PreSeIlCe Of JUWO Witnesses.
to fold between said end pieces When the FREDERICK J( GERHARD. crate is closed, and pins passing through Witnesses:
5 said hinged cross pieces and holes in said S. E. PEARsoN. partitions. ALVIN' NELSON.
