STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OI-IN Rooms FLAN- NERY and ETHAN I. Donns, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to means for closing the outer end of the bearing sleeve,the object of the invention being to so connect a cap or closure with a bearing sleeve that it can be quickly removed to permit access to the bolt head for testing purposes, so that it may be as "quickly replaced, and so that normally, the

invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims r In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a stayboltstrueture showing an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of head on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the bearing sleeve; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the bearing sleeve; Figs. 6 and 7 are separate views of the cap or closure, and Fig. 8 is a view of a modification.
1 represents a bearing sleeve having a curved interior surface 2 forming a bearing for the head 3 of a staybolt 4,said sleeve being threaded exteriorly the screw through a boiler sheet, and at its outer end, the bearing sleeve is made with a portion 5 which extends somewhat beyond the threaded portion of the sleeve. The portion 5 of the bearing sleeve is made with laterally projecting segmental shoulders 6 and from each of these, a segmental flange 7 projects outwardly.

cal shape with its internal dimensions and configuration such as will provide suitable clearance for the head of the staybolt.
The cap or closure 10 is provided with laterally projecting beveled flanges or cams 11 for a purpose hereinafter explained. In the drawings, we have illustrated two such cam flanges located diametrically opposite to each other.
An annular nipple 12- projects from the central portion ofthe cap or closure 10 and is made to flare somewhat and enter loosely into an annular flaring groove 13 in the central portion of a dome-shaped head or carrier Di -whereby the cap and carrier are loosely connectedtogether so that the cap may have sufficient movement to the carrier (a clearance space 15 being provided between them) to permit said cap to compensate for slight inequalities in its bearing face or its seat.

The head or carrier lt-is pr0videdinteriorly with segmental beveled shoulders 18, between which. and the shoulders 6 on the bearing sleeve, the beveled flanges or cams 11 on the cap will be disposed when theparts are in their normal positions, and the said cam flanges 11 will be disposed in the spaces formed between the flanges 7 to prevent the cap 10 from turning. It will be observed that there is a slight clearance space 19 between the cam flanges 11 of the cap and the shoulder 6 on the bearing sleeve.
The assembled cap 10 and head or carrier 14 will be placed on the extended end of the bearing sleeve and the head or carrier 14.- will then be turned with the use of a suitable wrench. The head or carrier will turn relatively to the cap and the segmental shoulders therein 17 will become disposed behind the segmental shoulders 6 on the bearing sleeve. At the same time, the coiiperation of the shoulders 18 in the head with the cams 11 on the cap will serve to press the latter tightly upon its seat and cause the V shoulders 17ft-o bind against the shoulders.
