PIPE FOR REGULATING THE SMOKING 0F TOBACCO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed July 11, 1914. Serial No. 850,438.
larly to the type of cover in which a hollow plug of metal, or other suitable material, is made to fit into the bowl of a pipe, being fixed therein by a screw thread and having a valve on the top of the plug to regulate the admission of air. One object of this present invention is to make an improved construction of plug or cover, wherein springs and projections bearing against the interior of the bowl are employed. For this purpose the plug portion that fits into the bowl is made in the shape of a thin metal ring extending from the horizontal flange which rests upon and covers the bowl. The ring is cut to form a plurality of spring strips or tongues the ends of which are shaped to form tapered studs extending outwardly. The turns may be cut diagonally as desired. When the cover is pushed into the bowl of the pipe the taper studs on the ends of the tongues press against the inside of the bowl, thus holding the cover in position and enabling its being easily removed for recharging the pipe and closing it again when lighted. By means of this arrangement one size of cover may be fitted and used with different sized bowls. The flange is provided with a central hole or aperture having an upwardly extending wall into which a bowl-shaped valve member is inserted, being preferably held therein by friction. The valve member is provided with a lateral orifice through which air may pass. being regulated according to the position of the valve member relatively to the surrounding wall.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, illustrating the invention to a scale of about twice the correct size,
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved cover,
Copies of this patent may be obtained. for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
Fig. 2 being a sectional elevation showing the operation of the valve member.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modified form.
In Figs. 1 and 2 a is the cover or flange for closing the bowl and 0 is the plug or ring extending from the same into the bowl. 0' are the taper plugs or studs fixed to or formed with the spring stripsor tongues f cut from the sides of the ring 0 in a diagonal direction. The plugs or studs 6 which are forced by the strips into frictional contact with the inside of the bowl by the strips 7 thus permit of the cover being forced into its locked position on the bowl and also being withdrawn from the latter for charging it with tobacco. g is the bowlshaped valve member located in the upwardly extending wall h which surrounds the aperture 70 in the flange a. The valve member 9 is provided with a lateral air hole or orifice 0, which is opened by raising the valve as shown in Fig. 2 and pushed down for closing the same as in Fig. 1. In Fig. 3 the plugs or studs 6 are carried by the spring strips 7 cut from the ring 0 in a vertical instead of a diagonal direction.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I A cover for tobacco pipes consisting of two parts, one of which comprises a horizontal flange adapted to rest upon and close the bowl of the pipe and having an aperture therein, an upwardly extending wall surrounding said aperture and a downwardly extending ring portion having strips cut therein, said strips being provided with outwardly projecting studs, the other part comprising a bowl-shaped valve member having a lateral orifice and being adapted to operate in said walled aperture whereby the supply of air may be regulated as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLI-AM HENRY NEAL.
