J iwfl BY 4a ATTORNEY SYLVESTER IlilRESCI-LIII, OF KEANSBURG, NEW JERSEY.
ENVELOIP.
Specification of letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed March 23, 1916. Serial No. 86,227.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SrLvnsTER FRESCHI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keansburg, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelope, and more particularly, has for its object the provision of an envelop provided with an improved closure therefor.
Other improvements, are to provide an envelop closure, which may be quickly and easily sealed, and when sealed will be neat in appearance and practical in every respect, for commercial use, opening of the same being impossible without detection.
A .still further important characteristic of the invention resides in the novel structure of the envelop, the closure securing means being so constructed as to allow the same to be manufactured without additional cost to the manufacturer; further by reason of its exceedingly simple construction, providing an envelop which is strong and durable in use and highly eflicient for the purpose designed.
The improvements in detail and arrange ment of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the invention.
Figure l is a rear view of the envelop in open position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the same as closed, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates the envelop in its entirety, the same comprising the usual pocket structure 2 and flap portion or closure 3. The portion of the pocket 2 is provided with a tongue 4, which tongue is cut from this body portion, as at 5, the same being so cut to form a tongue portion having substantially divergent sides. Arranged directly beneath the tongue 4 is a slit 6, the same being of a greater length than the width of the tongue 4i, thus allowing for the ready reception thereof. some suitable adhesive is, applied to a portion of the tongue as at '7, to enable the same to be securely fastened in position. The flap or closure 3 is provided adjacent its upper extremity, with a similarly slitted portlon as at 8, which is also of greater length than the width of the tongue 4.
In reduction to practice and assuming that the user desires to secure the flap 3 in its closed position, the same is of course, moved downwardly over the open portion of the pocket 2, whereupon, the tongue 4 is passed through the slit portion 8 and then backw'ardly upon itself, and upon being moistened at the glue portion 7 the outer extremity of the same is then passed into the sht portion 6 as arranged in the pocket 2 of the envelop. When in this position, pressure may be applied to that point adjacent the adhesive coated portion of the tongue 4, whereupon the same will readily adhere to the side wall or face of the envelop, thus rendering it impossible to subject the same to the action of heat whereby the adhesive may be moistened without detection.
It will of course be understood that in view of the fact the tongue 4: is bound to the envelop body through the medium of the adhesive on the tip thereof, that the portion of the tongue visible in Fig. 2 acts as the binding member of the flap 3 of the envelop. An envelop opening instrument such as is commonly used, may simply be slipped under the tongue 4 and upon breaking the binding member the envelop is simply opened. The salient feature of the invention, thus lies in the sealing tongue 4 which may be quickly broken by an opening implement slipped therebeneath as above explained.
While I have herein disclosed a specific embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent to persons skilled in the art that the invention is capable of embodiment in other forms than devices differing in detail and arrangement from that shown, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claim.
I claim As a new article of manufacture, a one piece envelop comprising a body having bottom, top and end flaps, said bottom and end flaps being folded together to form a pocket structure, said top flap having a slit formed therein, said bottom flap having a pair of inwardly extending .slitstthus form 7 ing "a tongue integral with the "bottom 'fiap and within the contour of the edge of the bottom flap, whereby :ibefore the envelop is used, said tongue will fit closely within the bottom flap to be shielded from injury, said tongue having adhesive material upon its inner surface when in a normal position, said bottom flaphaving a slit formed therein below the base ofthe tongue, so that when the top flap is ,folded over the said 7 itongue is through the slit theneo f for holding the 'top' flap in a closed position,
and said tonguethen isp-assedinto the slit =In testimony whereof I aflix .myZsignature in presence of two witnesses.
