J. SCHEVENELL.
PROTECTIVE BINDING FOR COLLARS.
APPLICATION FILED ALiG.3l, l9l8.

2 SMWM Chimp W1 3 JAMES gCHEvENELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PROTECTIVE BINDING FOR (DOLLARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed August 31, 1918. Serial No. 252,237.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES SCHEVENELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Bindings for Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates tobindings for collars and consists generally of a device having grooves for receiving parts of a collar in such a manner as to hold the binding in position on the collar. The binding which I have designed is especially adapted for use on the corners of turned-down collars, the object thereof being not only to ornament a collar, but to reinforce what is often a weak place in a collar, and, if the collar be actually torn, to hide the defect. The device has a further utility, because by its use distortions due to imperfect laundrying will be rectified and the corners of the collar brought into symmetrical relation to each other.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a collar to which my invention has been applied.
Fig. 2 is a View of the blank from which my protective binding is formed.
Fig. 3 is a view showing a modification of the binding.
Fig. 4: is a perspective view showing the device applied to a collar, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device detached.
The binding consists of right and left handed parts A which are made from a blank such as a having a body portion that is adapted to be folded, as indicated by the dotted line, to produce a wide internal flange c and a narrow external flange 6 between which the edge of a collar flap may be inserted. The blank a is provided with an extension I) having the edge alined with the fold line of the blank. The extension I) has an end 6 which may be folded on the transverse dotted line to produce an inside flange.
When the device is applied to a collar the wide flange 0 will extend inward between the neckband and flap of the collar, while the folded end of the outside flange b will rest behind or within the neckband of the collar, so that the protective binding will be securely held in position on the collar.
The protective binding is preferably made from resilient metal, or from metal which may be made resilient after the protective binding is completed.
The invention is adapted for use with new or old collars, or with collars the upper corners of which have been injured by the laundryman. Many collars after being laundried are found to be abraded or worn at one or both of the upper corners. By the use of .my device these corners will be concealed and reinforced by the binding, enabling the wearing of the collar regardless of the defects thereof. Furthermore, if the laundrying has been imperfect and the corners of the collar are distorted, the protective binding will re-shape the corners and bring them into proper alinement with each other.
The modified protector of Fig. 3, which is designated a, consists of a sheet of metal bent to form a back flange a and a front flange a the bend of the metal being at the left in said figure. The flange a is extended and bent to form a flange a overlapping the flange a as shown by dotted lines, and to embrace the upper edge of a collar. The transverse bend is, however, at a different angle from that of Figs. 1 and 2 to make the protector fit a collar having a different design. The lower part of the blank shown in Fig. 2 is not used in forming the protector shown in Fig. 3, said part being so far removed as to leave only a very small portion thereof, as shown.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A protective binding for a collar, having an inside flange and an outside flange, the outside flange being extended and having a folded end.
2. A protective binding for a collar, having an inside flange and an outside flange, the outside flange being extended and having a folded end, the space between the inside and the outside flange being smaller than the space between the folded end of the outside flange.
3. A protector for turn-down collars, having a groove for receiving the free edge of a collar flap, and another groove for receiving the folded portion of the collar.
4:. A blank for a protective collar binding, having a substantially rectangular body portion and an extension, said body portion being foldable to form inside and outside flanges, and said extension being foldable flanges, and said extension being foldable to to form an inner flange, an edge of the exform an inner flange. tension being in alinement With the folding 10 5. A blank for a protective collar bindline of the body portion. 5 ing, having a substantially rectangular body In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
portion and an extension, said body portion being foldable to form inside and outside JAMES SCHEVENELL.
copiel of thii patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the commissioner of ratentl Washington, D. 0.
