UNI E STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. PEGRAM, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.,
IMPROVEMENT IN SUN-STROKE PREVENTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,749, dated July 23, 1872.
- Specification describing a Sun-Stroke Preventer, invented by WM. M. PEGRAM, of Baltimore, in the countyof Baltimore and State of Maryland.
The nature of my invention is fully represented in the accompanying drawing, to which reference is made.
A represents a metal ring one-sixth of an inch wide, one-twenty-fourth of an inch thick,
, andfive inches in diameter, to which two pieces of one-fourth-inch elastic, B B, are attached by means of copper rivets (l O G G, the elastic being connected at the point of crossing by copper rivet C. E E represent punctured holes to beused in attachingthe, preventer? in the position designed for it. F represents a secptionof sponge.
The whole drawing represents the sunstroke preventer as ready for use, and its operation is as follows: Attach the metal ring A, with the elastic bands B B secured thereto by means stated above, to the crown of the hat, using the punctured holes E E, through which it must be sewed to the crown. I use a circular piece of oil-silk, rubber cloth, or their equivalents, to be inserted between the meta-1 ring A and the crown of the hat. This will perfect the device by protecting the crownfrom the action of the water in the sponge F, which is wet and inserted under the elastic bands B B, which completes the fixture. The sponge can be removed at will, and wet as often as the wearer may desire.
This will prove an unfailing preventive to sun-stroke; and my little invention of the fixture with the sponge combined has been pronounced by physicians as the simplest and best invention for the purpose "designed ever seen. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A device for preventing sun-stroke as a new article of manufacture-the metal ring A, elastic bands B, sponge F, and piece of oil-silk,
rubber cloth, or their equivalents, arranged and combined as shown and described.
