WINDOW ADJUSTER AND LOCK.
Application filed September 20, 1918.
Be it known that I, JAMES A. LANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of LosAngeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement inWindow Adjusters and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for bowlng easement window sashes and the like.
With easement windows, it is customary to mount the window screens inside of the sash; and with ordinary windows, it is quite Common to place the shutters outside of the sash. The principal object of my invention is to provide a device whereby a easement window sash may be operated from the inside without disturbing the window screen and whereby the shutter mav be operated without disturbing the sash. Another principal object is to provide for the locking of the shutter or Casement window sash or the r like at any desired point within its range of movement. Other principal objects are to make such a device as simple and cheap as practicable and to achieve advantagesl hereinafter appearing. The invention consists mainly ina lever operatively connected to the sash or shutter to operate the same from inside the room without disturbing an intervening screen, sash or the like and provided with a locking device adapted to lock the sash at any point within its range of movement; it also consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described. In the accompanying drawing wherein like numerals refer to like parts wherever they occur.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section takenl through a easement window with the sash partly open, showing an adjuster'embodying my invention applied thereto; the sash being shown -in closed position by the dot and dash to more clearly illustrate the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary cross section taken through the outer end of the locking bar, showing the window closed and the locking bar in a locked position, the locking bar being indicated in unlocked position by the dot and dash lines;

In the accompanying drawing, my invention is illustrated as applied to a Casement window.v In said drawing, lv indicates the sides of the window frame, 2 indicates the window sill, 3 indicates the easement window sash pivotally mounted at one side to the side of the window frame l by means .of hinges 4.'
Mounted on the lower inside face of the easement sash is a horizontal guide rod or bar 5 whose body portion is spa-cedslightly from the inner face of the sash and whose end portions are offset and secured to thel inner face of the sash by screws or otherwise.
' Slidably mounted on said guide bar is a loop 'from the side of the frame to which the sash is hinged. The inner or short arm of the lever is bentat an obtuse angle .to the outer arm and extends through a slot provided therefor in the face of the window frame. The inner end portion of the lever 7 is offset upwardly and vhas a plate 10 riveted o r otherwise secured to its underside. The plate is provided with dowinvai'dly extendingfside flanges 11 having oiiipositely disposed ears or lugs 12 depending therefrom at the`inner end of the plate. vThe inner end of the lever 7 is 4provided with a ldrop handle 13, that is, aliandle or extension havinga hollow liead'portion 1l which is pivotally mounted lon the downwardly depending ears 12 of the plate 10 'b v means of horizontally extending pins 15 which pei-mit said handle poition to hang normally in a vertical position close tothe window frame and to be swung into a horizontal position for manipi-ilayting the lever. B v this'arrangei'nent. the handle is accessible from the interior of the room and when it is brought into a horizontal position, it constitutes an extension oielongation of the short arm of the lever and thus makes it easier tov actuate the same. As the fulci'um of the lever is spaced away from the axisof thev hinges of the sash, the swinging movement of'the lever causes the sash also to swing on itshinges/` the slidable strap that connects the end of thel lever to the guide bar acconimodating itself to thisI movement by sliding on the guide bar..
4In order to provide for the locking of the easement window atany point in its range,

frictional locking bar is of the same general lshape as the actuating lever 7 and mounted immediately below the leven For the puiL pose of mounting the locking bar 16 it is provided with two elongated slots 1T and 18. The slotlT isdispos'ed parallel with the short arm of the lockingbar and actuating lever and the other slot 18 is disposed obliquely to the long ariii of the lever. Thefulcrum pin 8 of the lever 'T passes through the slot 1T and a pin 20 specially7 provided for 'the purpose on the lever near its outer end extends through the other `slot 1S. .By this arrangement, the locking bar is made movable obliquely relatively to the lever, the movement. being' partly longitudinal of the long arm of the lever and partly transversely the-reto. The movement thus provided for is effected by means of the drop handleof the lever as follows: The inner` end of the locking bar has a 'downwardly extending' port-ion 22 that is provided with a vertical slot 23 through which a horizontally disposed pin y24 passes. 'This pin extends across the liolvsaid locking 'bar coperating with the 'fu,l Crum pin S and the pin 20 on the outer end ofthe actuatinglever to permit and control the direction of said movement.
Near its outer end', the 'locking bar'l is rounded off on its inner face as at Located in the slidable loop or strap 6 between the 'top' and bottom flanges" thereof is a clampingblock or friction shoe 26 having a rounded portion 27. This friction shoe is located between the rounded off portion 25 of the locking bar and the guide. rod or bar 5 secured to the inner face of the easement window sash 3,.and is secured in lplace between theI lianges of the slidable loop by means of a pin 28, said pin being slightly smaller than 'the hole provided therefor in thebloek so as to enablel said bloc-kto move slightly relative to said pin. The curvaturev ,of the rounded off portion 25 of the locking bar is .such thatl when the locking bar is in the position corresponding to the horizontal position of the drop handle, there is `suftcient clearance between the rounded portion 27 of the.T clamping block 26 and the edge of the roi'inded off portion'25 on the inner'faee of the'locking bar to permit the connecting loopto slide freely on the guide rod; and when the drop handle is turned into a vertical position, the edge of the locking bar is forced against the rounded por- Y rod at an and all Jositions within the rannte l v s of movement ofi; the easement sash.
The inner margin of the outer endvof the long arm of the locking bar is provided with an extending finger 29, preferably beveled on its outerface; and the window frame is provided with a member for cooperating therewith. As illustrated in the drawing, this cooperating member is a plate 3() secured to tlretl.,wiiiclow sill and having an upright port-ionl 31 opposite the extending linger of said locking arm. This upright port-ion is so positioned that when the locking arm is in its unlocked position', the'eX- tending finger tliereofiwill barely clear said member and so that, when the locking bar is in its forward positioni,"'the finger thereon will overlap or pass bevond saidy member and constitute therewith a lock.
In the modification shown in Fig. lQof the drawing, the inner face of the locking bar 32 adjacent the. rounded portion of the friction shoe 33 is shown beveled as at 34 instead of being rounded so as to coperate with the rounded portion of the friction shoe. The friction shoe in this figure is loosely pinned in place between the flanges of the slidable loop so as to be forced against the guide rod when the locking bar is thrownl forward. It will also-.be noticed in connection with this figure that the locking bar has no finger extension. The finger being necessary only to prevent the window'sash being forced open from the outside.
Obviously the construction hereinbefore described admits of considerable modification without departing from my invention and I do not wish to be restricted to the details thereof.
VVhatI claim is:
1. The comb-intion with a window frame having a sash or the like hinged thereto at one side of an adjuster therefor comprising a horizontal guide-rod mounted on said sash, a lever pivotally mounted on the bottom portion. of said frame, one arm of said lever being slidably connected to said guide-rod so -as to be slidable thereon and the other arm ofsaid'lever having a handle extending inside of said frame for manipulating said lever, and a locking arm associated with said lever and operable to clamp the connection between said lever and said guide-rod.
2. The combination with a window frame having a sash or the .like hinged thereto at one side of an adjuster therefor comprising a horizontal guide-rod mounted on said sash,l a lever pivotally mounted on the bottom portion of said frame, one arm of said lever being slidably connected to said guide-rod so as to be slidable thereon and the other arm of said lever having a handle extending inside of said frame for manipulating said lever, and a locking arm associated with said lever and operable to clamp the connection between said lever and said guiderod, said handle being pivoted to` swing vertically and having an eccentric portion arranged to coperate with said locking arm to move the same.
3. The combination with a window frame having a sash or the like hinged thereto at one side of an adjuster therefor comprising a horizontal guide-rod mounted o n said sash,
a lever, which has one end operativelyslidably connected to said guide-rod and its other end in position to be actuated from within the room, and means for locking the connection between said lever and said guide-rod, said means comprising a locking member movably mounted on said lever and havinoV c am slots and said lever having pins extending through said slots,and means for moving said locking member independently of the body portion of said lever.
4. The combination with a window frame having a sash or the like hinged thereto at one side of an adjuster therefor comprising a lever, which has one end operatively slidably connected to said guide-rod and its other end in position to be actuated,k from Within the room, and means for locking the connection between said lever and said guiderod, said means comprising a locking member movably mounted on said lever and having cam slots and said lever having pins eX- tending through said slots, and means for moving said locking member independently of the body portion 0f Said lever, saidv means comprising a drop handle pivotally mounted on the inner end of said lever having an eccentric portion arranged to bear against a coperating part of said lockin member.
5. The combination with a window frame havi a sashor the like hinged thereto at one si e of an adjuster therefor comprising a horizontal guide-rod mounted on said sash, a lever having one end slidably linked to said uide-rod and its other. end manually opera le, a bar obliquely slidably mounted on said lever, and means for moving said slide-bar to frictionally hold the link 1n any 4adjusted position on said guide-rod, said means comprising a handle pivotally mounted on the inner end of said lever and having an eccentric portion arranged to coperate with said slide-bar.-
6. The combination with a window frame having a sash or the like hinged thereto at one side of an adjuster'therefor comprising a horizontal guide-rod mounted on said sash, av lever pivotally mounted on the bottom portion of said frame, the outer arm of said lever being provided with a connecting member that is slidably mounted on said guide-rod and the other arm of said lever having a handle extending inside of the room for manipulating said lever, a slidebar movable with said lever `but movable obliquely also relative to said lever and independently thereof, a portion of said slidebar near the outer end of said lever being in position to frictionally bind said connecting member against said guide-rod.
7. The combination with a window frame having a sash or the like hinged thereto at one side of an adjuster therefor comprising a horizontal guide-rod mounted on said sash, a lever having one end slidably linked to said uide-rod and its other end manually operale, a bar obliquely slidably mounted on said lever, and means for moving said slide-bar to frictionally hold'the link in any adjusted position on said guide-rod.
8. The combination with a frame having a member hinged thereto of an adjuster therefor comprising a guide-rod mounted on said hinged member, a lever having one end slidably linked to said guide-rod and its other end manually operable, a bar obliquely slidably mounted on said lever, and means yoblique slots fitting over sai for moving said slide bar to fretionally hold the "link in any adjusted position on 'said guide-rod:
