[RAIL-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. PATTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pendleton, in the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail joints, the object being to provide a joint in which the meeting ends of adjacent rail sections will be held against both vertical and horizontal movement in the event of the accidental displacement of the bolts which are ordinarily used for holding the rail sections connected.
Another object of the invention is to provide a joint of this character, which is of simple construction, reducing the amount of material necessary for its manufacture, and simplifying the operation by connecting the rail sections.
To this end the invention includes identically formed rail ends, each of which comprise a longitudinally extending offset from the rail web formed with an inclined upper edge for engagement within the fishing space of the adjacent rail end, a horizontally disposed slot extending transversely through one-half of the rail base beyond the web and tread of the rail, the opposite half of said base being cut away, a tongue extending from the latter half of the base for engage- 11161113 in the slot and a lug located within the inner end of the slot for entrance within a notch formed in said tongue, whereby the rail ends will be held against relative vertical movement.
The invention further includes the following novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

rail is indicated at 10, the web at 11 and the head or ball of the rail at 12.
The main portion of the web 11 and the head 12, is cut transversely at one end to provide an abutment 13 for the adjacent rail end, which is similarly formed, the two ends being identical in construction. The web 11 is also provided with a longitudinal extension 14, which is offset from the main portion of the web and is provided with an inclined upper edge 15. This extension is adapted tobe received within the fishing space 16 of the adjacent rail end.
The base 10 of the rail is thickened beyond the end of the main portion of the web 11 and is provided with a horizontally disposed slot 17 which extends transversely through one-half of the base flange, the opposite half of which is cut away as shown. By those slotting the base flange 10, there is provided a lower extension 18 and an upper extension 19, the latter projecting slightly beyond the end of the former.
The opposite side of the base flange 10 is provided with a tongue 20, which terminates short of the end of the main portion of the web 11 and which is disposed above the plane of the lower surface of the base flange for entrance within the slot 17. When so positioned the end of the extension 18 will abut a shoulder 21 formed beneath the tongue 20, while the extension 19 will rest upon the top surface of the said tongue, this extension being a lateral continuation of the extension 14 of the web 11.
Located within the slot 17- and adjacent the inner edge thereof, is a longitudinally extending lug 22, which is adapted to be received within a notch 23 formed in the tongue 20 adjacent the web 11. The base flange 10 is cut longitudinally on approximately its central line, so that it projects slightly within the inner face of the extension 14, so as to provide a seat 24 upon which the lower portion 25 of the web 11 of the adjacent rail section will rest.
The end of each rail section is reinforced through the medium of a laterally extending web 26 and the adjacent ends of the sections are held against relative longitudinal movement through the medium of bolts 27, which pass through openings 28 in the main portion of the rail web and openings 29 in the extension 14.
When the two rail sections are joined together, they will be efi'ectually held against relative vertical and horizontal movement in the form of interlocking connection between the ends of the sections, while relative lon gitudinal movement will be prevented by the bolts 27. By the construction just described, a joint is provided in which the material necessary to make a secure joint is reduced, the extensions 1% which take the place of the ordinary connecting bars or fish plates being approximately only one-half of the usual length.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is reserved to make such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A rail joint embodying identically formed rail ends, each of said ends comprising a longitudinally extending-offset from the web of the rail for engagement within the fishing space of the adjacent rail end, a horizontally disposed slot extending through one-half of the base flange of the rail, the opposite half of the base flange being cut away and a tongue extending from the end of the last mentioned half of the base flange for engagement in the horizontal slot ,of the adjacent rail end.

A rail joint embodying identically formed rail ends, each of said ends comprising a longitudinally extending ofi'set from the rail web for engagement within the fishing space of the adjacent rail end, a. horizontally disposed slot extending transversely through one-half of the base flange of the rail, the opposite half of said flange being cut away, a tongue extending from the end i the last mentioned half of the base flange for engagement in the horizontal slot ofthe adjacent rail end and a longitudinally extending lug located within said slot for entrance into a notch formed in the tongue of the adjacent rail flange.
