To all whom it may concern? Be it known that we, THOMAS E. MISEE and EMMETT L. TAYLOR, citizens of the United States, residing at Barling, in the county of Sebastian, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail joints. I I V The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved form of joint which forms a continuous rail surface thereby obviating the disadvantages of the joltingand wear by the conventional form of rail jolnts.
A further object resides in the provision of a rail joint of the class described which is so constructed as to obviate the necesslty of using auxiliary fastening means such as fish plates and bolts. 7
The invention further contemplates the provision of a rail joint which shall be of such simple structurevas to admit of ready and economical manufacture and which shall be easily applied. 7
With these and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangements of parts to be more fully hereinafter described and lllustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, andin which;
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the improved rail joint, Fig. 2 1s a top plan view of what is shown in Fig. 1, Fig, 3 is a top plan view of one of the rail sections, Fig. 4 1s a perspective view of one of the rail sections.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A and B designate the abutting ends of two adjacent sections of railway rails. In order to permit the cutting of the sectionsto form the novel joint, the webs of theserails adjacent their abutting ends are thickened so as to present in conjunction with the other 7 arts of the rail, a substantially rectangular cross-section. The joint is formed by cutting each of the rails in a similar manner and interlocking the said cutportions as will be Specification of Letters Patent.

The cut away end of the extension is further provided witha laterally disposed head 10 which extends to the other side of the rail and which has its forward face beveled as at 11. Rearwardly of the forward extension 5, the top portion ofthe rail is provided with a recess 12 for seating the head 10 of the other rail section and adjacent this recess there is provided a suitable portion so positioned and formed that its faces 13, 14 and 15 oppose'the cut away portions 6, 7 and 8 of the extension 5.
From the foregoin it will be observed that a joint is provide which will permit no lateral or upward movement of one rail with relation to the other rail. It will be further observed that it requires practically no time to assemble the cut ends of the rails to form the joint. The beveled faces 11 of the extensions 5 form in conjunction with the adjacent portion of the rail sections a contin-' uous rail surface. s
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple form of joint has been provided which requires the use of no auxilentire tread and being further provided with 110 portion with a socket extending across the I tures, inthe presence of two witnesses;
