RAILWAY RAIL.

RAILWAY-RAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed July 26, 1915. Serial No. 41,979.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH COUSINEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benicia, in the county of Solano and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rails of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in railway construction, the primary object being to provide a rail having its ends so constructed and arranged as to interlock with the end of a similar rail, and wherein the employment of fish plates or analogous devices for connecting the rail ends is efiectively obviated.
Another object of the invention is to provide the meeting ends of two rails with beveled co-acting faces, one of said rails'at the reduced end of its beveled face being formed with a dove-tailed lug and being likewise formed, adjacent its widened end with a dove-tailed'slot and a depression communicating with the slot so that the lug of one of the rails may be readily received within the depression and guided thereby into the slot, while transverse securing elements pass through the rail ends to securely lock the same and so join the rails as to provide a substantially continuous track.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of two rails constructed and connected in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a central horizontal sectional view through the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking toward one of the tapered ends of either of the rails.
The rails 1-1 have their body portions of the usual construction and, while in the drawings, I have illustrated only one end of each of two rails, it is to be understood that the other ends of the rails are similar to the ends shown. The rails, at their ends have their webs thickened and the same are cut vertically and transversely to provide both the head, web and base flange of the rail with a vertical shoulder 2. The terminal of this shoulder providesthe end of a vertioally disposed longitudinally arranged tapered face or side 3, and formed upon the said side 3 at the outer end thereof is a longitudinally extending lug 4, the said lug having its upper and lower walls disposed at an inward angle so that the said lug provldes a member which is substantially dovetailed in cross section.
The flat flared or beveled face 3 of each of the rails, adjacent its shoulder 2 is formed with a 7 longitudinally extending slot or pocket 5 and the upper and lower longitudinal walls of said pocket are inclined or flared to provide a dove-tailed slot and this slot is arranged in a direct line with the lug 4L. Communicating with the slot or pocket 5 is a longitudinally disposed recess 6, the same being of a width equalling the inner and deeper portion of the pocket 5, or if desired, slightly exceeding the same, and the outer wall of said depression is concaved, as at 7. By this arrangement it will be noted that when the flared faces 3 of the rail ends are brought together, the lugs of each of the rails will be first arranged within the clepression 6 and a longitudinal movement of said rail ends toward each other will bring the respective lugs within the respective pockets and the reduced ends of the rails into contact with the respective shoulders 2 of the co-acting rails. The rails, intermediate the depression 6 and the lugs 7 are provided with alining elongated bolt openings 8 through which pass suitable bolts 9 that are provided with securing nuts 10.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to thosr skilled in the art to which such inventior appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with two rails, each of said rails having its head, web and base incut to provide a shoulder and being further out or formed to provide a flat face which is arranged at an angle from the said shoulder to the end of the said rail, the said flat face, at its outer end being centrally formed with a longitudinal dove-tailed lug, said face. adjacent the shoulder of the rail being centrally formed with a longitudinally extending dove-tailed slot to receive the lug of the adjacent rail, and being further formed with a longitudinally extending widened depression communicating with the slot, all as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with two rails, each of said rails having its head, web and base incut to provide a shoulder and being further ing dove-tailed slot to receive the lug of the. 7
adjacent rail, and being further formed with a longitudinally extending widened depression communicating with'the slot, and the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
ends of the rails between the lugs and depressions thereof being provided with transverse openings which are adapted to aline when the rail ends are assembled, and securingelements passing through the said openings.
In testimony whereof I aflix 'my signature in presence of two witnesses.
