provide a simple and effective construction whereby a device of this class may be reduced to compact form for storage or other the parts thereof whereby the latter may be held in their open or expanded relation without liability of accidental collapsing. The invention more particularly relates to buckets and pails designed for the use of tourists, motorists and the like; wherein the device is simple in construction and capable of being collapsed when not in use and readily expanded for use. More particularly the invention pertains to the means for holding the telescopic sections of the buckets or pails in their open or expanded condition said means adapted to collapse with the collaps- 7 ing of the bucket or pail when the latter is moved to its compact form.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of theinvention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which c'omewithin the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.

Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail of the upper end'of the device shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail the bucket comprises a lower section 1, an upper section 2 and an intermediate section 3 all of which sections are in the form of hollow inverted conic frusta and of such dimensions that when the upper section 2 is moved to its upper position it frictionally engages the section 3 andthe section 3 engages the section 1 to form an approximate telescopic connection having fluid tight joints between the sections and when in its inoperative or collapsed position the sections are adapted to nest or be collapsed to occupy a minimum amount of space. The section 1 is provided with an ordinary ,base flange i and the up per section 2 with a pouring spout 5 which communicates with the interior of the bucket by'the usual opening which is guarded by a strainer 6 and immediately above the strainer 6 is a shield 7 The upper edge of theupper section 2 is provided with a beading8 which usually comprises a rin -shaped wire about which thematerial of the section is rolled orfashioned so as to provide a rounded upper edge for the entire device.
Extending diametrically across the upper member 2 between opposite portions of the beading 8 is a cross bar 9 the median portion of which is provided with a handle 10 and below the handle 10 the bar 9 is provided with an aperture 11. see Fig. 5. The bucket or pail embodying the features of the inven tion simulates an ordinary telescopic or folding drinking cup. While it is possible to have the upper edge of one section and the lower edge of the nextsection throughout the series of sections frictionally engage each other with such a degree of tightness or firmness to prevent the bucket or pail from collapsing under ordinary usage, it will be understood that it is far preferable to provide means whereby the pail structure may be rendered substantially rigid when the several sections are disposed in their open or expanded position or arranged to form a practical bucket or pail.
The lower section 1 is provided with a floor or lowenwall 12 which is preferably formed integral with the side wall of the section 1 so that the lower section is approximatelv cup-shaped in transverse cross section. Mounted centrally on the lower 'wall 12 is a tubular standard 13 in the wall of which is a longitudinally-extending slot 1 1 having an offset 15 at its upper end and an offset "16 'a'itits lower end. 'Slida'bly mounted in the tubular standard 13. is -.a sleeve 17 having near its lower end a radially-projectingv pin 18 adapted to travel in the stud 14 when the member 17 is moved longitudinally with respect to the standard '13. The upper inner face'of the sleeve 17 is provided with a transversely-extendlng pin 19. Slidably mounted in the sleeve 1 is a plunger 20 provided with a longitudinally-extending slot 21 the upper end of which is provided with an oilset 22 and the lower end with a similar reversely dis posed offset 23. V Secured to the upperend of the plunger 22 is ahead 2tprovided with a threaded stud 25 arranged to receive a, clamping nut 26. When positioned the standard 13 is disposed centrally of the lower section 1 and secured to the lower wall 12 thereof and the stud 25 extends through the opening 11 in the {bar or ib-ail 9 of the upper section and is secured through the medium of the clamping nut 26. When it is desired to move the sections 1, 2 and 3 to their expanded positions the intermediate sleeve 17 is given a partial rotation which moves the pin 18 out of the oflset 16 and permits it to travel in the slot 14: and at the same time disconnects the offset portion 23 of the slot 21 from the pin 19 and the various sections may be moved to theireXtended po sition and a partial rotation of the sleeve 17 locks the pin 19 in the ofi'set 23 of the slot 21 and also looks the pin 18 in the ofliset 15 thereby'holding the various sections in their expanded positlon.
