Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 6, 1917. Serial NO. 195,018.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT DUDLEY FIsH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and'State of New York, (whose post-oflice address is 28 West 39th street, New York city,) have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dental Surveying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
he object of my invention is to provide a dental surveying apparatus of the class shown in the Hanau Patent, No. 1,230,156, patented June 19th, 1917, and to simplify and improve such apparatus and make it so that it may be applied directly to a pantograph so that a survey'may be made on the same scale as the article surveyed or on a larger or a smaller scale as may be desir able. Ihese and other objects are-accomplished by my invention, one embodiment of which is hereinafter more particularly set forth. a V
For a more particular description of my invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part here of, in which the figure shows a side eleva tion of my improved apparatus as applied toone arm of a antograph.
The arm 1, o apantograph of the conventional kind, is mounted on a suitable table 2 which has an opening 3, below which is a bracket 4, which is preferably secured to the table, and from the lower portion of this bracket 4: rise leveling screws 5 which are pointed at their upper ends and carry a suitable object support 6. This object support is provided with two or more clamps 7 which are preferably adjustablymounted thereon and at their upper ends these clamps are provided with adjusting screws 8 by means of which the Object to be surveyed, as a casting of a set of teeth 9, may be accurately placed and securely held below the opening 3 in the table 2. The object to be surveyed is placed below the level of the table so as to be out of the'way at all times and accessible to an attachment placed on an ordinary pantograph.
The arm 1 has anumber of slides 10, 11 and 12 mounted thereon, which slides may be held by their respective set screws 13, 14 and 15, in any desired position in. a manner that will now be described, for a purpose that will be, specified.
The slide 10 carries a curved arm 16 which micrometer screw 17. It is obvious,
is screw threaded at its free and upper end to receive a corresponding micrometer screw 17 and it is also provided with a scale 18 which runs downwardly and parallel with the axis of the screw 17. The scale 18 is divided in any desired way, as inmillimeters, and the pitch of the threads on the micrometer 17 is madeto correspond. The upper end of the screw 17 is provided with a knurled head 19 and near the lower end is placed a collar'20 which may have suitable markings on its upper surface. In the preferred embodiment of my invention the markings are such that when the micrometer is used, readings may be had down to a thousandth of a centimeter as this is found suificient for all practical purposes. The lower end of the micrometer screw 17 is pointed and takes into a corresponding opening in a spindle 21 which slides freely in a guide 23 that is preferably made integral with the slide 12. The spindle 21 is provided with an adjustable collar 24: which surmounts a coil spring 25 substantially as shown in the preferre'd'embodiment of my invention, and this spring'25 normally keeps the spindle 21 up against the point of the from the foregoing, that the spindle 21 may be lowered at anytime or raised, as the case may be, by turning the head 19 of the screw 17. The lower end of the spindle 21 is provided with a collar 25 against which is placed a pointer 26 with its point 27 exactly in the axis of the spindle 21, as nearly as possible. The pointer 26 is mounted on a washer 28 which in turn is mounted on a coil spring 29 and this is held by a cap screw 30 mounted at the lower end'of the spindle 21 so that the pointer 26 may be swung into one position or another, during the use ofthe apparatus, as may be conven: ient, without changing the position of the point 27 relatively to axis of the spindle 21.
The slide 12 has an upwardly extending arm- 31 in which is mounted a screw 32, and this screw carries a nut 33 which is placed accurately between gears 34 which rise from the slide 11. The purpose of this nut 33 and the parts connected therewith'is, to enable one to accurately adjust the slide 12 from Y the slide 11 by first loosening the screws 13 and 15 and tightening the screw 14, and then both the'slides 10 and 12 may be adjusted accurately fromthe. slide 11 as a base of;

operations. When in place they may be fixed in place by their respective screws.
In view of-the foregoing, the operation of my improved apparatus will be readilyunderstood. Assuming a casting 9 of teeth is in position as shown and the apparatus has been properly adjusted and the screws 15, 14 and 13 made tight so as to hold the until the point '27 is at the right position and then a mark may be made by the pantograph and in case the elevation of the position of this point is to be determined and recorded, it may beby reading the marks on the collar 20 and on the scale 18 and recording what is read. The point 27 is then shifted by moving the spindle 21 and the screw 19, as above described to the next desired position, and then the record is made on a piece of paper and recorded as before. These operations are repeated until all the desired points are accurately located and vrecorded. r
